Here's Our top five TCM picks for the week of Dec. 7, 2020.
.1. Sons of the Desert (1933) at 9:30 pm ET/6:30 pm PT Monday, Dec. 7: This holiday season, TCM is giving classic-comedy fans the gift of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy as December's stars of the month. TCM will air L&H shorts and feature films, both silent and sound, on most Mondays in December. The crown jewel of tonight's lineup is the pre-code classic Sons of the Desert, in which Stan and Ollie sneak off to their annual lodge convention despite the disapproval of their wives (Mae Busch and Dorothy Christy).
2. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT Wednesday, Dec. 9: Director Robert Wise's science-fiction adventure about an alien (Michael Rennie) who literally tries to bring "peace on earth" is one of the more groundbreaking, influential films of the '50s. We'll be live-tweeting on Wednesday night at https://twitter.com/oldhollywood21.
3. Pride and Prejudice (1940) at 5:45 pm ET/2:45 pm PT Friday, Dec. 11: There are many reasons to watch MGM's delightful adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, including Marsha Hunt's wonderfully gauche performance as Mary (you won't be able to get "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton" out of your head after watching this film). P&P is followed by a documentary on Hunt at 8 pm ET that covers her blacklisting during the McCarthy era
4. Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) at 4 pm ET/1 pm PT Sunday, Dec. 13: MGM's wonderful musical starring Judy Garland has an unbeatable score, including the classic holiday tune, "Have Yourself a Merry LIttle Christmas."
5. Fanchon the Cricket (1915) at midnight ET/9 pm PT Sunday night/Monday morning: This hard-to-find Mary Pickford film was considered lost until 1999, when it was discovered in a vault and subsequently restored. This beautifully photographed fairytale will be a real treat for Silent Sunday Nights fans.
