Okay! It’s Em’s birthday today, so I wrote a little birthday fic! xx
"Happy birthday, (y/n)!" Barbara shouts, hugging you. You hug her back and wave a hello to Aaron. "So what are you doing to celebrate tonight?" She inquires. "Got a date?" She nudges you with her elbows and wiggles her eyebrows.
"Well, I'm supposed to hang out with Chris at some point, but I don't think it's a date." You stare at the floor, feeling a bit nervous when you say his name.
"You're hanging out on your birthday. That makes it a date, right?" Barbara looks to Aaron and he simply clears his throat, shrugging.
"We have to go." He says suddenly, grabbing Barbara by the elbow and pulling her gently. She glances at him, confused and then gives you a quick goodbye hug. As they walk away you think you hear him say something like, "It's going to be a surprise." You stand there, perplexed, watching them walk away. Before you can think too much into it, you're startled by a hand on your shoulder.
"Hey, (y/n)!" Chris grins at you. "For some reason you look like you're older. I don't know why." You shake your head at him giggling.
"That's strange. I'm not sure why I would look older." You play along with him. "It's not like it's my birthday."
"Oh shit! It's your birthday?" He feigns shock. "Good thing I got you a present, huh?" The grin returns to his face and he lifts one hand to show you a small, wrapped, box. Looking from the box to him, a smile appears on your face.
"You have such good luck!" Laughing, he hands you the box and you unwrap it, pulling off the lid. Inside the box there is two tickets to your favorite band. "Chris! What the fuck?!" You jump into his arms, squealing. You hug for a long moment and then you let go, looking at the tickets again. "Wait, these are for tonight?"
"Yeah I figured we could go." He rubs the back of his neck and continues, "I thought that maybe..." He paused, shoving his hands in his pockets and rocking back on his feet. He nervously stares at the ground. Suddenly you understand why Aaron was acting so strange.
"You thought this could be our first date?" His head shoots up to gauge the look in your eyes. "Chris, I'm sorry..." The look he gives you when you say that makes your heart immediately ache. "I'm just kidding! I was joking! Of course I'll go on this date with you!" You tell him, quickly, regretting the decision to go the joking route. You see him physically breathe, as if he'd been holding his breath. He just stands there, lips together in a tight line. "Chris? Are you okay?"
"No," he mummers with a straight face. "I'm fucking great!" He grins and pulls you into another hug. Laughing as you smack his arm.
"I thought you were really mad at me, you ass!" You say, to the best of your ability, your face squished against his chest. "Okay." You push away. "How much were these tickets?"
"Nope!" He puts an arm around your shoulders and the two of you start walking down the hall. "Let me treat my girl on her birthday."
