The Color of Paint and Divinity~ :)
Okay, I lied. There’s one thing I know I’ll remember: the burn of his hand on mine as he stops me and the moment I look back to see the light from the stained glass windows dance across his face, the tug of my heart as I see the just-barely-there freckles scattered across his nose like stars in the sky.
He holds a nebula inside him, I think — the light setting his brown skin awash with reds and blues and golds and greens, the splatter of white and yellow paint on his cheek and dusting of freckles underneath — and the only other thought in my mind is: beautiful.
This is an original piece! It was supposed to be a short story collection but has since spiraled out of control and become its own thing ajfkfjkwk
The story follows the narrator, Aster -- a quiet, closed off economics major with a passion for astronomy -- and Alioth, an art major named after the brightest star in Ursa Major, as they get to know each other and Aster learns there's a lot more to life than boring economics classes.
So far, this passage is probably my favorite! We see the story through Aster's eyes, and he's a very complicated character. He's got this colorful and vibrant inner world he keeps locked inside, so he's a lot of fun to write! With him, the narration style shows the reader what's important to him: what he focuses on, what he keeps thinking back to, etc., so when he says something in complete contrast to what he's thinking, the reader can guess what he really means.
My professor also said this was his favorite part and that I convey passion beautifully :')
Edit: I forgot to mention: the title is inspired by Four by Sleeping at Last, so go give that song a listen!
