Happy International Women's Day! We're celebrating the strength of women and girls in the Pacific. We'd like to shine a spotlight on a very brave young lady from one of our #waterforlife project sites. Like many women and hits in Fiji, Lili survived a terrifying night during Cyclone Winston. She lost her home, her school and her best friend Thelma. We spent an afternoon with Lili and her family during an assessment of the damage to her schools water system. Despite her loss, Lili was still full of smiles and positive attitude. She is testimony to the courage and strength of women in the Pacific. We're bringing you to Bua, where Joeli's great grandfather first settled in 1976. Forty years later, and four generations of families now occupy the 14 households that make up Cobue village. The community here have experienced extreme dry weather, and health issues resulting from water contamination. Families were sharing two ground wells, until a long dry period followed by heavy rain caused one of them to collapse. The remaining well is unstable and the sandy ground makes it prone to contamination from toilet waste. Now every household is looking forward to clean and safer drinking water with the assistance of @rotarypacificwater. A new borehole gravity system will carry water safely to every household. Savitri preparing lunch in her kitchen shows another angle to safer water needs of #women in rural communities. Women need a safe and sustainable supply of water, not only for #drinking but also for #cooking, preparing and growing #food. While construction was underway in Cobue Settlement #Fiji, Savitri and her husband Deo kindly opened their doors to our plumber field staff. Savitri prepared daily meals for the plumbers, and the couple provided comfortable accommodation in their cottage. @rotarypacificwater 's vision of providing safer water can only be achieved with voluntary contributions like this from the communities.
