When Mere Masialewa (pictured right) was a little girl, she would climb up the hill behind her home to collect two buckets of water each day. At that time, a small fresh water stream provided enough water for the whole village. As the remote coastal village population grew and groundwater sources dried up, households were forced to ration and reuse the very little available water. Mere, now 77 years of age, will no longer have to experience the hardships of water scarcity. Thanks to funding from the Embassy of Japan, @rotarypacificwater are installing 4 new rainwater storage tanks to meet the water supply needs of Naqumu village.

Sai removes all the stones then adds fresh water to make clay. She achieves remarkable symmetry using her hands, a rounded stone and coconut husk. Once formed, the sculpture is dried for several days in the sun. Like her mother, Sai has been gifted with a strong cultural identity passed down generations of artisans. Her traditional sculptures are made of clay, which is extracted from the ground behind her home in Rewa. Find her sculptures on display at @unisouthpacific Oceania Gallery.

Sai is a potter from Rewa whose sculpture designs are now on display at our 'Imagine A Day Without Water' Exhibition. Here she holds one of two Saqamoli, a traditional Fijian water vessel used by Chiefly families of Rewa.

Soko prepares lunch for Master Tiko and his family every morning. We followed her around the staff quarters at Vatulele District School to see how #water is used for #food preparation in remote island communities. Water is fetched from an unprotected well using a bucket. Soko boils the water over a fire to kill off some of the bacteria, however there is no guarantee that its safe for drinking. Root crops are the staple food source for Pacific Island communities. Soko is seen preparing cassava. She cuts off the rough skin with a knife and chops it into large pieces, which are rinsed in water.
