My Darkest Minds Playlist
The Darkest Minds Playlist
My entry for the TDM contest is a playlist. Disclaimer, I take playlists very, very seriously. Too seriously, one might say...whatever, it’s a thing.
For me, book soundtracks have to hit 3 key points: atmosphere (most important, it has to convey the overall theme/feeling/vibe/whatever of the book), words (atmosphere overrides words, but they shouldn’t be totally off topic) and cohesiveness (all songs have to fit together)
So without further ado, I give you my The Darkest Minds playlist (Spotify and Grooveshark links at the end, I couldn’t get the list to embed for some reason. Grrrr, argh):
Welcome to Thurmond: Lose Your Soul by Dead Man’s Bones I get up in the morning/ Put my dreams away/ I get up, I get up, I get up again
6 years: Knives by Lemolo All this time we’re looking up/ Keep your head from blowing up
Escape: Trouble In Eden by Jesper Kyd -this one’s instrumental, it has a sneaky tension thing going for it that seemed very appropriate
Searching for East River: Horses by High highs - this song didn’t have a specific lyric that jumped out at me, but it’s wistful and rhythmic feeling fits perfectly with my mental picture of Betty rolling through deserted towns.
Ruby’s song: Human by Daughter Underneath this skin there’s a human/ Buried deep within there’s a human/ Despite everything I’m still human
A life lived in hiding: We Are Broken by Paramore Cause we are broken/ What must we do to restore/ Our innocence/ And all the promise we adored
Ruby & Liam/Behind the rest stop: Breathe Me by Sia Be my friend, hold me/ Wrap me up, unfold me/ I am small and needy/ Warm me up and breathe me
“Nope, mine now.” Hope Valley Hills by Helios - another instrumental, this one’s for Ruby and Liam that night in Betty
Welcome to East River: Now We Can See by The Thermals Yeah baby we were nothing/ We existed for less/Our present was empty/ Our history a mess/ But now we can see/ Now we do as we please/ Now we do away with the disease
“A little closer, Green; I won’t bite.” Only Love by Ben Howard Darling, you’re with me forever and always/ Show me love or show me heart
The Slip Kid’s Watching: I Will Possess Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie I will possess your heart/ You reject my advances and desperate pleas/ I won’t let you, let me down so easily
“Never, never, never. I am never going to forget you.” In My Veins- Andrew Belle Oh you’re in my veins/ And I cannot get you out
Showdown: Black Grease- The Black Angels Slow, you kept me in the storm/ You showed me things galore/ Made me want so much more/ And now denied/ The things I saw inside
No shelter: Colony by Now, Now Together we killed the colony/ We’ll take away the heart of me
Panic button: Fallout by Linkin Park I’m swimming in the smoke/ Of bridges I have burned/ So don’t apologize/ I’m losing what I don’t deserve
Finishing the story: Medicine by Daughter You could still be/ What you want to/ What you said you were/ When I met you
What’s next/End credits: Who Are You, Really? By Mikky Ekko Well I’ve got nothing left to prove/ Cause I’ve got nothing left to lose/ See me bare my teeth for you/ Who, who are you?
