The internet is a window with tinted glass, people. Please remember that. You think you’re looking at the whole world, but you’re actually looking through something designed to keep your attention for as long as possible. Fear holds attention. Anger holds attention. Outrage holds attention. Peace doesn’t. Contentment doesn’t. Ordinary kindness doesn’t. The world outside your phone has always been and will always be more balanced than the world inside it. Please stop letting them convince your brain and nervous system that cruelty is the default state of humanity. I promise you it’s not. Love is the carrier of all things and if you need a perfect example of it, go volunteer in a hospital, a nursing home, a school, a food pantry, a beach to pick up trash, an animal shelter. Watch a nurse staying late. A volunteer holding someone’s hand. A teacher buying supplies with their own money. A neighbor bringing over a meal. A stranger donating blood for someone they’ll never meet. etc. Love has carried every generation, it has built everything we have today. And it always will.

I’m not saying there isn’t cruelty and evil, there is, I’m saying it isn’t the whole story.

You can have any animal for a pet. Any complications such as “keeping the animal healthy and happy” and “the time and effort it would take to keep happy and healthy pet” and “keeping yourself uneaten” and “the pet I want is kind of extinct” have all been solved perfectly. sick of the infinite ai slop? buy Google Premium; it'll automatically detect ai within a site and gives it a credibility score. with premium plus, you can shuffle high-credibility results to the top.

do you want a "luxury" experience? well, you'd have to pay for that luxury, and since the company sure doesn't want to pay its employees; the cost would fall to the consumer.

when automation has made every experience unpleasant; the experience of genuine humanity will be commodified.

also I don't think parents "these days" are uniquely terrible, I just think neglect is showing up in new ways as technology progresses. today's ipad kid would've been wandering around in a ditch alone all day and night before. parents not wanting to have to deal with children is not a new phenomenon.
