This week our Charm School girls were given the home work of creating an original character as well as a neck up look that tells us about that character, lets see how they did shall we?

Step into my chamber and I’ll foresee your future, for I am Madame Rita DePalma, fortune teller/psychic/Tupperware™ consultant. I’m sensing something… a string of numbers… nine of them, maybe a social security number? Write yours down on this piece of paper for me. Looking into my crystal ball, I see catastrophe and mayhem, the beginning of the end is just around the corner—oh wait, that’s just a mirror. I can answer any question you have about your life—past, present, future, love, death, whatever your heart desires. Wait a minute, I’m having a vision… give me your hand and I’ll read your life line. Oh, this does not look good, but it is still quite fuzzy to me… maybe another hundred dollars would make it clearer?
Madame DePalma is a staple attraction of the Iowa flea market scene, where she often finds her gullible customers who want to have their fortunes told. I’m a textbook Leo with a Capricorn moon and will screw you over without second thought just to make a buck. I’ve had my gift for as long as I remember, and… wait… I’m getting something now… were you born on a day ending in Y? Yes? Be on the lookout for a new and exciting presence in your life—it could change everything. Be warned though, I sense death in your future… near or far, I can’t tell… let me hold onto something personal to get a better reading, maybe those diamond earrings or a credit card? Here, drink this, and I’ll read your leaves and spill the T. It’s only $4.99 per minute.
Harper: I am really excited about this character! I think this was a smart route to take with the assignment, as this character could be made funny in just about any scenario we throw at you. I think you had the best description, as well. I am going to challenge you to take this persona and really run with it! Make sure you are really exaggerating everything you do here for maximum impact. Really, the only thing I have to really critique here is the use of shimmer eyeshadow in the crease. I strongly recommend using matte shades in this area, because the shimmer is going to reflect light and make your brow bone protrude rather than diminish into the new crease you have drawn on. Don’t be afraid to make it darker, it will add to the effect! Overall, nicely done!

Everyone I would like to apologize but I sadly wasn’t be able to make it this week for the homework. Luckily my cousin Nina Tofeeve sent me some pictures of her makeup skills for me to try and learn. You see she considers herself to be a high flying brow girl. Sadly she’s dumber than mud and her parents where cousins so she has a few chromosomes out of place but other than that she is fine.
As you can see she loves camo as well as everything to do with hunting. Well anyway thanks for allowing my cousin to do my homework for me.
Harper: I found your description really funny, but I think there was a real mismatch between what you wrote and what you did. There’s nothing about the look that connects to the character you’ve described in any way. In a shoulders up challenge, you are going to be evaluated on everything from the shoulders up (this means the white t-shirt and lack of wig). There really isn’t enough for me to critique here, visually. I think the character you’ve chosen should be fine, but make sure you are really committing to the character through acting AND appearance – they need to work together! Play it up, exaggerate it more than you think you need to. If at ALL possible, please try to take photos in better lighting—it’s very difficult to see exactly what is going on when the photos are dark and blurry.

Back story: I just had a couple drinks. I wasn’t my fault. Him and his secretary….so origional. So when he came home I poured myself a drink. And he got the bottle….to the back of the head. ;) whoops must3be slipped.
Harper: I’ll be honest, was pretty underwhelmed by this submission. This is a character that has been done many times before, and it doesn’t seem like you’ve tried to put your own unique spin on it at all. Your description was very brief and didn’t offer much insight into the character. What’s her personality? Her backstory? I think the look is fine for this character, but it doesn’t seem like you paid very much attention to the directions at all (shoulders up, three photos, 1-2 paragraphs of description). For this week’s exam, I want to see you add another dimension to this character, because right now it is reading very flat. As always, the deans are here to help if you need it!
Maya Monet
Natasha Moone is the world’s premiere werewolf showgirl in the Ziegfeld Follies! She’s just like any other girl, but just a little bit hairier. Natasha likes to sing and dance, tend to her windowsill flower garden in her New York apartment, and going to speakeasies with the other Follies girls (just don’t tell the coppers). It’s the roaring twenties, so why not have a little fun while you’re young enough to have it?
Harper: I think out of all the girls, you had the most unique character! I love the headpiece, and I think the wig will work well, too. I will say, though, that I didn’t get werewolf from the photos. Make sure you really play that up with the full body look! Adding lights and darks will add a bit more definition to the beard (incorporating your wig color will help pull it all together really nicely). I appreciated that you really tried to think outside the box this week, but I worry that your character is more look-based than personality-based. Make sure you are selling her during the main challenge! Good job this week!

Harper: I think you really nailed it with these pictures! While there are few spots in the makeup I would clean up a bit (the lower lashline, in particular), the wig is snatched and the look is really well put together. I appreciate you incorporating props into your photos to add to your character, as well! The character itself is not the most original thing I’ve ever heard of (and I wish you would have given her a name), but I think you did a good job of putting her together. Looking forward to seing what you do with her during the exam!
