Quitting.
So tomorrow I notify my manager that I will be leaving before the end of April. I really enjoy(ed) my job and I love the people I work with. When I first started going to CSUEB I was nervous about going to a new school and not knowing anyone. I saw the ‘now hiring’ sign while buying my books for the new quarter and went for it. I was hired as a temporary associate at the campus bookstore thinking I’d probably be let go after 2 weeks...3 years later I’m still here.
I’ve grown so much since I started working here. I was raised semi-sheltered in the sense that I did’t really ‘hang out’ with people my parents didn't know. Yeah, I had friends at school, we would grab lunch sometimes (after I got a car) but I’d never go to parties and rarely went out with friends on a whim. My ‘weekends with friends’ consisted of a select group of friends my Mom knew, going somewhere within a 15 mile radius and coming home before the sun goes down. All this being said I never felt my parents were ‘strict’, I thought they were being parents which was fine with me. I was raised in a big family and had countless close family friends so I never felt isolated from others.
Working at the bookstore opened this rarely explored social custom of ‘chilling with friends’ for me. I made friends completely outside my family circle who didn’t know my life story or who my parents were...it was oddly freeing. I will always be grateful to have met this great group of misfits.
