What if I ended my essay with "Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk"?

Also why do we have to do course evaluations? I feel bad when I have to say anything less than "teacher did amazing" but I also don't want to lie.

So you think you failed your first observation...

Deep breath.

It’s my fourt year, and somehow, I still feel that way. For some reason, the first one sneaks up on you when you’re not quite in the swing of things. It feels shitty when you feel like you could have done better, especially if you’re trying to make a good first impression.

However, try answering the following questions and I guarantee you’ll feel better about your lesson:

Did you have a lesson plan?

Was everything that was supposed to be on the board at the beginning of the period there?

Were most of the students on task?

Did any students participate?

Was there a beginning, middle, and end to your lesson (even if it wasn’t the one planned)?

Did you show patience while explaining directions for the 100th time?

Did you check at least one student’s work while walking around?

Did your technology actually work (for once)?

Did you have enough copies/materials?

Did you make a student smile?

Were you able to improvise questions or answers on the spot?

Did everyone behave?

Do you have decorations up in your room (even if it’s just one simple poster or anchor chart)?

Did the doorknob remain attached to the door? (That’s a new question I added as of today based on an actual experience)

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions... then pat yourself on the back. You didn’t do as bad as you thought.

Post observation with my principal didn't go as planned

These are a few of the things that she said: -I have no planning/preparation skills because I write my learning objective and assignments on the board during the same period as my lesson when my technology fails instead of already having them up. -I have zero classroom management skills as none of my students were engaged during my lesson (I must have missed something...) -and that I pushed back at her while asking questions. I was confused as to what she was saying since I did not sense these things and in fact I'd disagree. My students were talking out of turn because they were engaged... most if not all of the conversations were based on the lesson. Then she threatened me, saying that I of all people should not be "pushing back" at her since I do not have tenure, and that I will be written up for this. I don't even understand what I did, but she was extremely aggressive when accusing me of things that I did or did not do. Essentially, I almost got fired or quit today

On Evaluations

Be a people pleaser. When administration do their announced evaluations have a formal lesson plan with class handouts ready and in a folder to hand them when they walk in. Do a dog and pony show! Let me tell you a story. My very first year teaching when my principal told me I got to pick which class they were going to observe, I picked my toughest class. Why? Because I'm a humble person. I actually wanted to learn something. I actually (and stupidly) saw this as valuable and wanted to get the most out of it that I could. I figured, the way I would learn best is by getting help with what I needed most, which was this one class. The result? A bad evaluation. Bad enough to have me not return to that school the following year. Even though I wrote in that evaluation the reason I picked that class was because it was the toughest. No one tells you this though, which is why I'm telling you now. ALL it is is a freaking dog and pony show, so be the ring leader and just get through it and do yourself 2 favors: 1) Pick your best class 2) Bribe that class with candy (go ahead and tell them the principal is coming in but say it's to watch THEM, not you (don't give that away))  and say whoever participates the most (but not in a fake way) will get their own bag of jolly ranchers (trust me, it's worth it). It's sad this is the case. The fact is my evaluation could have been very helpful, had my principal seen it that way. My mentor teacher should have told me to pick my best class and do an "easy" lesson. To be honest though, they weren't much of a mentor anyway.
