Oh professional development days...

Lady: *spends 10 minutes talking about and pointing at some standards that no one can read from where they are*

Lady: *spends another 5 minutes trying to get us to "guess" how often a particular standard has been tested in an effort to hammer home how important that standard is

Lady: *spends the next 10 minutes on some other bs I've already forgotten*

Lady: ok, time to stop talking. You know, if we've [teachers] have been talking for more than 3-4 minutes, we've lost [the students].

Lady: *spends the next 20 minutes trying to give activity directions that make NO SENSE AT ALL.

..... and this has been the first 45 minutes of my afternoon district mandated professional development.....

If you’ve ever wondered how teachers are at being students-my district has a full day of PD (professional development) today and another teacher I barely know just placed this on my desk with a proud smile:

Even though we gained an hour for Daylight Savings, I feel like I can't get the hang of this week. Maybe it's because my body was really used to my school schedule and resents this ridiculous and unnecessary change in schedule. 

Since it was Election Day, we had PD. My school has a partnership with a local sailing club; several of our students learn to sail and build boats with them for math and science credits. We learned the basics of sailing with them today. 

It had a lot of potential, but I didn't have a very good time. I get motion sickness pretty easily, and we had a lot of set up to do in the harbor where the waves were really bad. I felt better once we were moving. 

At least, until I was talking a few pictures with my phone and I slid it back in my pocket and missed. The boat wasn't flat, so it slid right off the side into the Hudson River. 

Oh, and I got hit in the head with the boom. And we accidentally lost another boat's anchor (apparently they're very expensive). 

A lot of the other groups seemed to have a good time. But I usually feel less stressed after PD days; I already know I'm going to be going in tomorrow much more stressed. At least we're heading into a three day weekend.
