On the idea of ‘Themes’
One of the things I’ve been focusing on a lot lately when teaching my classes (In particular Savate at the moment since I’ve mostly been given control of the program) is themes. Now what I mean by that is as follows, it involves building the entire class around a specific focus whether it be a technique or concept within the art. For example the class I taught yesterday (4/19/17 as reference to the actual date) was focused entirely on combinations beginning with the jab. My next weeks class is going to be focused on spin techniques (set-ups, placement, etc). As far as building around concepts some possibilities include countering, evasiveness, and feinting. I’ve found it really helps increase comprehension if you keep classes unified around a singular theme, that way all the drills build off one another and can really assist in skill development. Now that’s not to be said that every class needs to have a theme but it can be incredibly helpful especially if you’ve noticed your students have specific flaws in their game or simply need to work on particular aspects of the art. A bit of food for thought I hope you all find helpful.
