Books I’ve used with my students & how….
This book I saw recommended on t*kt*k by a teacher who explained that he uses it in his very diverse elementary school to discuss the sharing and respecting of each others’ names. I thought it was a great beginning of the year read, so I used it with second graders and we shared the origins of our names as well as general lessons for how we speak to each other about our names. Loved this suggestion! And it fit well into the second grade teachers’ curriculum exploring empathy.
and she came to find out that too often the simplest things are the hardest to teach.
Books I’ve used with my students & how…
The Pet Dragon is an adorable book that tells the story of a young girl who loses her pet dragon; along the way, students explore Chinese characters as they’re overlaid on the page. I used this book with kindergarten and first grade students as a way to begin exposing them to the visual language of Chinese characters. They were very engaged and attentive, air-writing the words as I traced them on the page, repeating them after me, and making predictions about where the story might go. There’s also some supplementary activities available online I believe, but I didn’t have them at the time.
help one of my students gave a final presentation about her favorite series and then proceeded to talk about teen wolf for 10 solid minutes and I had to be NORMAL about it. I couldn’t say any of the stuff I wanted to say because I had to stay PROFESSIONAL. with a STRAIGHT FACE, as she was WRONG about DEREK HALE
student: hey what’s your favorite book?
me, thinking about trc: I’ve never read a book in my life
