Bricks made with tea leaves clad Beijing teahouse by Kooo Architects

Japanese studio Kooo Architects used custom-made bricks that combine compressed earth with waste tea leaves to create a natural feel inside the Théatre teashop in Beijing.

The store located in Beijing's central business district belongs to Chinese brand Théatre, which wanted to immerse guests in the tea-drinking experience.

“In the old days, people would just come and drink tea,” explained Yaowanee Thirakleela, the fourth-generation Cantonese owner of Jip Khao, Trang’s most longstanding and revered venue for dim sum. We were sitting in her restaurant, which at 07:00, was already packed with families, schoolkids, pensioners and people on their way to the office. “There weren’t many things to eat with the tea; a couple steamed dumplings, maybe deep-fried sticks of dough.” Yet over the decades, Thirakleela told me, Trang’s teahouses started to offer more food items, ultimately making the transition to full-fledged restaurants. Today, the city is synonymous with vast dim sum halls that offer dozens of steamed and deep-fried options, as well as noodles and rice dishes.

Finally got around to visiting Prince Tea House’s Flushing location the other day after a friend’s birthday celebration. It’s a cute tea house with a homey decor with the right touch of elegant quirkiness that we were digging. While most of my party got beverages I settled for the dessert trio which included the fruit tart, the vanilla ice cream choux pastry and the cranberry creme brulee, all of which were pretty scrumptious though I was especially digging the delicate cranberry creme brulee. I definitely wanna wanna try the purple yam souffle or one of their mille crepe cakes the next time I’m in the area though.
