"Araris?"

"Yes, Crion?"

"Why are we here?"

"Well that depends, Crion: do you mean 'why are we here as thinking creatures in this mortal realm?' or 'why are we here hog tied on the floor of this godsdamned lordling's basement pseudo-prison?"

There is a thoughtful pause. "Well, I think the former would be an interesting conversation to have twixt the likes of us, but I meant more the latter."

"Well on that, I could not comment, as it was you who came to me saying you needed help acquiring something interesting and important from the coffers of, as you put it, 'a rich nobleman who practically leaves his gil laying around.' So, I'm not sure these inquirer and inquiree roles are being assigned correctly."

"Yes, exactly! Very interesting, very important. The problem is that I don't actually know how to get where we're going from the outside, only from the cells."

"Dare I ask why that may be?"

"I've been here before."

"Perfect. So you do know why we're here. Why did you ask me?

"I wanted to know if you remembered if we had a plan or not."

"That's a stupid way to ask after that."

"You're a stupid way to ask that. So, did we have a plan?"

"I don't know, Crion, this was your idea, I had assumed you had thought things through a little more than this."

A relieved sigh, "Oh, that's good. I would have beat myself up for ages if I had forgotten something so important."

"So you don't have a plan." More a statement than a question.

"Correct."

"And you are pleased by this."

"In a sense, yes."

A slow intake and exhalation of breath, "You are literally the worst."

"Come now, I'm surely not liter--"

"You are figuratively the worst.

After a long pause, "..."

"What?"

"What' what?"

"I can practically feel you hurling ellipsis' at me. What do you want to ask?"

"Why are we here, Crion?!"

"Experimental growth formula."

"What?"

"For Deer."

"... What?"

"He's so small, and your department does really important work. I thought you might want to make sure your mascot could handle himself in the potentially dangerous situations you're likely to find yourselves in."

"That's... Actually rather thoughtful of you, Crion."

"Think nothing of it!"

"Well, now that we have all that out if the way," Araris stands, rope bindings falling in a heap at his feet, "Let's get on with it."

"Wait, you could have untied this all the whole time!?"

"Of course. Would you expect a knave such as myself to not know how to get out of compromising situations? Plus, I needed to catch my breath."

"That is... Not a bad point." Crion stands as well, a matching pile of rope forming at his feet. "I just wanted a bit to chat."

"...I think we've already well established your figurative state."

"I'd say that's fair to assume. Anyway, do you know how to pick a lock? Because that's actually something that's making me a bit concerned right now."

"I do, yes. Can you just do me a favor, though?"

"Sure, pal, anything!"

"From here on, Crion, I am in charge of planning."
