#TeamPaleo: What We Ate and How We Felt!
We left you last week with these delicious snack recipes for a weekend of Mainly Watching Sports and the promise that we would share more of our #TeamPaleo experiences. The recipes we tried from Plant-Based Paleo by Jenna Zoe were all delicious and we had a lot of fun cooking together and talking about what we were eating! But how did we feel? Well, take a look at our food diary, and see more of what we ate…
Monday dawns and with it day one for #TeamPaleo: Resolve is high and helped along by the new-found fun to be had playing with a spiralizer while preparing lunch. Oodles of Zoodles were the feast du jour (think pale green spaghetti). The humble zucchini is versatile veggie – we also discovered the 'core' doubles up as a small elephant head when combined with two peppercorns and a little imagination.
Day two: A bit of a headache sets in. Actually quite a lot of a headache, coupled with a hearty dollop of grumpiness. We put this down to caffeine withdrawal, which only makes a large flat white seem all the more appealing. There is absolutely no substitute for good coffee, and no amount of dehydrated, roasted dandelion root can convince us otherwise. Instead we seek distraction in food – Pea and Mint Falafels prove to be little orbs of green deliciousness. One of us discovers that hemp seeds not only provide a surprisingly crunchy addition to a tabbouleh salad but also are a potential choking hazard – although arguably only if you laugh heartily while attempting to swallow.
Day three: The headaches recede and a colorful and crunchy Raw Mexican Salad with Chilli Rellenos hit the spot. We even entice a passing visitor to join us. Communal lunches are proving to be fun – food shared with friends somehow tastes better – pure and simple.
Day four: One of #TeamPaleo pulls out the all stops and not only makes Sweet Potato Gnocchi with a red pepper sauce but a Chocolate Orange Pie for dessert – possibly the nicest thing we’ve put in our mouths all week! Seriously amazed that something tasting this delicious can actually be good for us!
Day five: Pouring down out side and all of us craving comfort food. Lucky for us then that a lunch of Neatballs (that’s vegan mushroom and seed-based meatballs for the uninitiated) with a hearty tomato sauce and quinoa are on the menu. And pretty darned tasty they turn out to be too!
So that’s it – and how has 5 days without caffeine, dairy, gluten and alcohol, and of eating recipes from just one book left us feeling? Not at all bad. In fact for a wet Friday afternoon in January, surprisingly chipper. And might we do it again? Perhaps we will – the recipes are great – but for now the writing a shopping list including cheese, coffee beans, crisps and wine is a thing of pure joy!
So, all in all, we declare #TeamPaleo a success! You can see more photos on Facebook and Instagram. Have a great week everyone!
