Hitter - Chapter 1, Part 4
PHOTOGRAPHS
Loud ringing jolted River from her rest. Her eyes met Kim as she walked over to lean on the girl’s desk, “So, how was your first day, girlie?”
Throwing her arms above her head, she stretched her limbs. A small yawn escaped her lips, “Well… I can’t say it was the best first day of school I’ve ever had.” Kim laughed as she took River’s hand and pulled her out of her desk.
“It was pretty amusing for me!” Kim chuckled and nudged the blonde with her elbow.
“I bet.” The group left the classroom and began walking to the entrance.
“Hey…” Kim started, stopping her pace in front of the red double doors. “I was wondering if you would like to walk home together.”
A shy smile crossed River’s face, “I… I would like to but, I don’t know the town. I’m sure I’d get us lost. And my Dad already said he would get me.”
“No biggie.” Kim smirked, “Well, in any case, would you be down for a party?”
“A party?” River’s brow eyebrows raised.
“Yeah.” Kim smiled as she walked through the doors, “Some kids are throwing one after Homecoming and since your late getting here I think it would be a good opportunity to meet some of the other kids. Who knows, you might get more than one friend.” The girl teased.
“Hey!” River bumped into her as the neared the sidewalk, “I’ll have you know that I was very popular at my last school-“
“Mmhmm!” The girl laughed as she readjusted her hat, “So you’ll go?”
“Uh… Sure. Why not?”
“That’s my girl!” Kim ruffled River’s blonde bangs as she turned and began to walk off. “See ya tomorrow, girly.”
The corner of her pink lips rose as she waved her new friend goodbye, “See ya!”
Soon after, she spotted a familiar black car. The entire way home, during their family dinner and into the night she thought about the day’s events. Her new friend, Kim. Whom she thought was incredibly beautiful. That angry student council president, that knew so much about her past… The bratty blonde, Amber, and her two sidekicks. Her blue-green eyes drifted from the rotating ceiling fan to her dark pink backpack. After a few moments, she pushed herself to sit upright on the bed.
Night had crept in through her bedroom window, leaving a faint ray of light on the carpeted floor. Photos on the walls glistened in the moonlight, making it hard to see the contents of them. River’s eyes moved from her back pack to the wall of photographs. A hollow feeling filled the girl’s chest yet again. Ever since she was a child, she documented her life through photographs. This wall showed every foster home, every group home; everywhere she had ever been to. It showed her best times and her worst times. Even her past life… With her real parents. A photo with a man and a woman, lovingly holding their four year old daughter caught River’s eyes. This was her favorite of all the photos. Tears brimmed at her lash line. She hated to admit it. She hated that they were gone. She missed them so much... A small sniffle startled the girl. She rapidly shook her head, “Stop!” Plucking her shirt off of her chest, she brought the collar to her eyes. The cloth quickly soaked up her tears as she attempted to stop herself from producing more. Her breath became shallow as she whispered, “I can’t cry anymore… I’m sorry you had to see that, Mom… Dad…”
Releasing a sigh, she let her arms fall to her sides. Once again, her backpack caught her attention. Her bare feet tiptoed across the worn carpet to the bag. She knelt down and began to rustle through the bag. Her fingers ran across a filmy piece of paper. She tugged the corner until it came out of the bag to reveal the photo she found on her locker. It truly was unflattering. The girl rolled her eyes as she chuckled to herself, it was kind of funny. She straightened her back as she examined the photo. A smirk crossed her lips as she turned on her heals to cross her room. She plucked a tac off of her desk and leaned down next to her wall of photos. Adjusting the photo in correspondence to all of the others, she carefully pushed the tac through the top of the photo into the wall behind it. Rising to her feet, she stepped back to admire the wall. She had accumulated quite a bit of photos, she was proud of this wall. Her eyes stopped on a photo of her playing baseball. Her mind immediately wandered to the events of today…
“Whoa… You’re better than I thought you’d be.” River smiled to the Red haired boy. She collapsed on the grass after taking a big drink of water. He loomed over her and plucked the bottle from her hand, “Hey!” He tossed the lid on her stomach and gulped down the rest of the water, releasing a satisfied sigh afterwards. “You suck.” The girl laughed as the tall boy sat on the grass next to her.
“Hey, now. I thought you just admitted that I was a great pitcher.” He smirked.
“Well… I wouldn’t say great.” She joked. The boy smirked and pinched her. She squealed and exchanged the favor. After they both settled down, the boy seemed to hesitate with speaking. River raised a curious brow as he remained in silence. “…You okay?”
“Huh?” A surprised look on his face quickly settled as he continued, “Oh. Yeah. It’s nothing.” His gaze drifted to the street across from the school.
River furrowed her brow together. She then raised up to sit with him, “You know, usually when people say ‘It’s nothing.’ It’s usually something that’s bothering them or-“
“Nothing’s bothering me.” He coldly stated as he shot his eyes to her.
“Then what’s on your mind?” She insisted.
The boy sighed and leaned back on his palms, “I… uh... I was just wondering how Prince Nath got you all worked up earlier.”
River stared at him for a moment, quietly. She slowly moved her gaze in a different direction, “What do you mean? He was trying to get me in trouble. Of course I was upset.”
The boy looked her over slowly. After a moment, he finally spoke, “You both stopped yelling halfway through your conversation, then you started again. It just sounded odd to me.”
River met his gaze and cocked an eyebrow at him, “You were listening to us?”
He frowned and furrowed his brow, “Not by choice! The stupid principle took me to her office to chew me out!”
River smiled at him, “That sucks.”
His frown disappeared as he watched her, “So? What did he say to make you so mad?”
River pondered for a moment, “He… He told me he thinks I should go to counseling.”
Their eyes met and they both stared at each other. After a moment, Castiel burst into a fit of laughter, “Seriously? Does he think he’s Dr. Phil now? Why does he want you to go to counseling?”
River smiled at him, her nerves getting the better of her. She knew she didn’t want everyone in school knowing she’s a foster kid. She had to think of something fast. “Something about.. ‘The stress of me moving to a new school in the middle of the year is causing you to act out.’”, she mimicked.
“Seriously?” A smirked came across his face. “He’s an idiot but, I’ll admit… that was a pretty good impression.”
“You’re shocked at all my talents, right?” River giggled.
“Pfft, you’ll have to show me more than that to impress me, little girl.”
River chuckled at him, “Who said I want to impress you?”
The red haired boy leaned into her, his face nearing hers, he whispered, “I can tell you want to.”
River felt her face burn as she stared at him, “Uhh…”
The boy quickly started laughing as he hopped off of the ground. He turned to face her as he placed a hand on his hip, “I’m just messing with you, ironing board.” He extended his hand down to River. “Come on, let’s get lunch before the bell rings.”
River’s face remained glowing red with furrowed brows, “Ironing board?!” She punched him in the leg before grabbing his hand. He laughed hardily. Humiliated, she pinched him, “You’re an ass.”
He smiled, “You’ll learn to get over it.” He pushed her then took off sprinting for the cafeteria.
“H-hey!” River quickly regained her composure and chased after the boy, “Wait for me!”
Soft rain tapped against the window sill. Her blue eyes watched the pattern of rain droplets illuminate on the floor. Nuzzling her face into the soft pillow, she sighed. ‘Well, in any case, would you be down for a party?’ ,her friend’s words replayed in her head.
‘Shit the party...’
The blonde took in a deep breath, releasing it into a word, “Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.”
