Be the person you are happiest being, and it's ok if that changes from day to day. You are a person and people aren't static. Some days you can have eyeliner sharp enough to kill a man, others you can chill in a flower crown and big hoodie. Do it, be immaculately dressed one day and rock your scruff the next. Or rock that eyeliner or handle bar stache for months! I'm on team you however you choose to present yourself.

Hello. For a couple months now, I've been in a fog from writing - no inspiration. It's slowly going away, but even then. It feels hard to write. Plus, I'm still stuck on rounding out my characters. Any advice on how to get over this bump?

Well, first of all, you’re not alone. You may want to check out some of our tags - like this one, this one, or this one.

It feels hard to write because it IS hard to write. I know. I very rarely actually feel like I want to write. But I know that if I don’t write the stories that are in my head, nobody will. They just won’t be written. And for me, that’s been enough to keep me plugging away, even when I’d rather be doing anything else.

My daily goal is 100 words on one of my WIPs. Now I know that will seem miniscule to many, but that’s part of why it works for me. It’s such a small goal that even when I don’t feel like writing, I still feel like “well, I can at least do THAT much.” You know? And then once I get started, I often find that I write a good bit more than that. Not always! Some days I’ll grind my way up to 107 words and that’ll be all I can manage. But that’s okay. That’s 107 words I didn’t have before.

I wish I knew of a magic pill or potion that would make the words flow easily. Goodness knows I’d be taking some every day! But until then, the best I’ve found is to just keep plugging away at it, bit by bit.

Hi! I put a lot of pressure on myself to know all of my characters inside and out before I start writing any story about them (I don't know why I put that pressure on myself, I think because that's what I think I'm supposed to do). This often means that I put off actually writing, and abandon ideas. Do I need to know my characters completely before I start writing? Any tips for creating characters in a quicker & easier way?

First of all, the easy one:

Do I need to know my characters completely before I start writing? NO. 

See? Easy!

Additionally, unless you already have some kind of agreement with someone to write a story, whether a publisher with whom you’ve signed a contract, or a teacher who’s given you an assignment, or a friend to whom you’ve made a promise, you don’t actually have to write a story. You don’t owe anything to anyone but yourself at that point.

So if you enjoy getting to know your characters more than you do writing stories about them, that’s okay. Go for it! Have fun! It’s creative, it’s safe, it’s healthy - goodness knows there are certainly worse ways to spend your time. Abusing kittens, for example. That’s bad. Don’t do that.

But, if what you feel like you really want to do is write the story, and you’re thinking that getting to know your characters is just an excuse to procrastinate, well… then stop procrastinating and write the story! You don’t have to know your characters completely before you start, I promise. In fact, if they’re your central characters, you CAN’T, because there’s a darn good chance that they’re going to be changed through what they experience in your story. No matter how much planning you do ahead of time, you’re going to get new ideas along the way. Some you’ll use; some you’ll save for later; some you’ll discard. All of that is perfectly, completely, 1000% okay. (And no, that is not an extra zero. I meant that.)

I'm a teen writer and want to know how to make my writing become better so that I can publish a book that is good and not "that's good for a teenager". I practice all sorts of writing and even write fanfics to practice and see what people like. Tips?

It sounds like you’re already on the right track - you’re writing! The best way to get better at doing a thing is to do the thing. So, good for you, you’re already doing that.

Something else you can do is read. Read LOTS. Read and think about what works and what doesn’t, and why. When you read a book you really like, think about the parts that excited you the most, why they did, how those moments were crafted and how the author set them up with the earlier part of the story. When you read something you don’t like, think about what you don’t like about it and why it doesn’t work for you. Are the sentences long and confusing, or short and babyish? Is the pacing too fast and hectic, or too slow and your attention wanders?

Then, when you keep writing, think about what you’ve learned from your reading, and apply that to your practice. Try new techniques. Even if it doesn’t always work, you’re learning, and that’s important.

You may also want to search online or ask around to see if there are any local writers’ groups, how often they meet, and what the purpose of the group is.
