5 Apps you MUST download if living in Korea!
1) KakaoTalk
A free texting, calling, and video messaging app that is available for FREE! You make your own searchable id, connect your phone number (U.S., Korean, or any country!), and can update your profile with your photo and a background photo! The great thing too is that you can talk to people around the world with it and there is a way to see when the opposite person has seen your message (so you can usually detect when they’re ignoring you).
2) Naver App
Let’s face it. In America, we use Google, but in Korea, people use Naver. Google is great for Korean tourism, cultural, or historical information in English, but you’re really going to find that using this Korean search engine is a lot better for finding out specifics about the country like good places to eat, travel recommendations, events that go around in Korea, or maybe deals and steals while shopping!
3) Subway App
When you are living in a major city, such as Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, or Daejeon, there is a subway app that you can download that has all the stops and you can search the fastest way to get to a place in a city!
4) Naver Map App
Similar to Google Maps, you can put in the area that you’re starting at and put in your destination and you can choose your mode of transportation (public transportation, walking, car, bike) and either the shortest time or the shortest distance to get somewhere!
5) Bus App
I know people get a little scared when they first start riding the bus (since it’s so much easier to ride the subway around the cities), but if you download this app it makes life a whole lot easier. If you first search your destination through the Naver Map App and search for the buses that it shows to take, you can save certain bus numbers so that you don’t have to keep searching for the same buses that you use frequently! It took me a little while, but it sure makes getting around a lot easier when I have the bus to use as an option.
All of the above mentioned apps are downloadable on Apple, Andriod, or Windows phones and you can choose your language, except I’m not sure about the bus app being available in English. Anyway, if you’re studying Korean, I recommend changing your phone and laptop languages to Korean so that you get more practice seeing and reading the language!
