$3,000 RAISED FOR @DRESSEMBER!!! 🎉 First, thank you, thank you, thank you. When the pandemic set in I thought, “No way am I going reach my goal this year. It’s the highest one I’ve ever set.” Well you all proved me wrong, and we’re not even half-way through the month. And that brings me to the second thing I want to share. It’s day 12 of @Dressember and this weekend has been insanely amazing thanks to the generosity of others. In the past two days, donors have given $1,535 to my @Dressember fundraiser to fight human trafficking! That’s enough to provide nearly 3 months of case management for over 90 at risk youth in Thailand. Or it could cover trial fees for 14 court cases to defend child victims of sexual abuse. That’s just TWO DAYS of giving! Think of the lives that we can help to protect and change throughout this whole month! Now is an especially important time to give. In the age of a pandemic, the realities of human trafficking and the obstacles survivors have to overcome are only magnified. Because of the restrictions COVID-19 has put in place since March, many of the individuals our Dressember Network works to support and help return to a life of normalcy have lost their employment entirely or have suffered reduced hours as a result. It’s day 5 of Dressember and as I write this you’ve helped me raise over $1,160 to fight human trafficking! Unfortunately, human trafficking is a thriving business that only benefits from events such as natural disasters and pandemics. In May 2020, 6 weeks after shelter in place orders, calls to the Los Angeles trafficking hotline had increased by 80%. The reality is that a shelter-in-place order employs traffickers to further exploit individuals as there are less and less ways they can be caught or halted in their efforts. We often view these increasing calls to hotlines in two-fold: 1) we have a brief moment of thankfulness that everyday individuals are vigilant in their efforts to recognize and report the signs of trafficking, but also 2) we despair over the fact that this means more trafficking is taking place. I keep saying this, but I feel even more grateful for your generosity during this crazy year. I feel the weight of how costly it is to give during this season, and also how incredibly needed it is. So know that I appreciate each dollar you choose to give, and that your donations will contribute to life-saving, life-changing work. The reality is that the number of crisis trafficking situations* increased by more than 40% at the onset of COVID-19. (*Crisis situations are those in which shelter, transportation, or police involvement is needed within 24 hours.) COVID-19 has prompted unprecedented action over the last year. Schools have been forced to close and then facilitate virtual learning, many people have been working from home, and essential workers put their lives on the line each day to keep us all safe. But another thing COVID has impacted is vulnerable populations. In the midst of a crisis, vulnerabilities are often further exposed and exploited. According to @polaris, the number of trafficking situations increased by more than 40% at the onset of the pandemic.
