Team Refugee’s Olympic flag is a powerful symbol

What is it? To recognise the global refugee crisis, the Olympics allowed 10 refugee athletes to compete in this year’s games. While they officially competed under the Olympic Flag, non-profit The Refugee Nation commissioned refugee artists to develop a flag to represent them.

It’s good because the flag design chosen is based on a life-vest, a powerful and non-partisan symbol for so many who have had to cross the Mediterranean.

Wist je dat

Atleten op de vlucht ook kunnen meedingen naar brons, zilver en goud? Het Internationaal Olympisch Comité heeft een ‘team Refugee Olympic Athletes’ opgericht, dat ondertussen een tiental leden telt. Sportvrouwen en -mannen uit onder andere Syrië, Congo en Ethiopië zullen starten in de reguliere competitie, naast alle andere teams. 

"We zullen hen welkom heten met de olympische hymne en de olympische vlag", aldus IOC-voorzitter Thomas Bach.  

Wij weten alvast voor wie we gaan supporteren.
