Question 1: My Age is...?

Main finding: 93.6% of Rocketshipping on Tumblr are between the ages of 14-45. Most are between 18 and 28. 

Question 2: My Gender is...?

Main finding(s): 67.4% of TR fans are female, 10.5% are male, 12.6% are nonbinary, and 7.4% are genderfluid. 

Question 3: The Pokemon anime has over 22 seasons worth of episodes and movies. In which season/region(s) did you watch the most episodes?

Main findings: The episodes that took place in the Kanto region were the most commonly watched and the episodes that took place in the Unova region were the least-watched. 

Question 4: Have You Seen the Pokemon Chronicles "Special" episodes?

Main finding: at least 66.3% of fans saw some or all of these episodes, at least 9.5% saw none of them, and 13.7% has seen one or two episodes. 

Question 5: Which (if any) of the Pokemon Movies Have You Seen AND Enjoyed?

Main findings: The First Movie (Mewtwo Strikes Back), Pokemon 2000, Spell of the Unown, and Lucario and the Mystery of Mew are the most popular, as is the ‘Lift-off’ scene from the Volcanion movie lol:) About 30% of fans have not seen and/or enjoyed any of the movies. 

Question 6: Which (if any) of the Pokemon Movies Have You Seen AND Disliked?

Main findings: the least enjoyed movie were those that took place in the Unova and Kalos regions. ‘I Choose You’, the first AU movie, is also unpopular. 

Question 7: You are a firm believer in the inherent eroticism of high camp. 

Main findings: Most of you had no idea what I was talking about. Three people gave satisfactory open-ended responses. At least 20% of you agree. 

Question 8: Jessie, James, and Meowth are my favorite characters in the anime.

Main finding: 65.3% of TR fans say that Jessie, James, and Meowth are their absolute favorites, one person only likes James, and at least one person just doesn’ like them at all for some reason. Ash and Misty are also popular among TR fans:)

Question 9: My opinion of Rocketshipping (in regards to canon) is that:

Main findings: Team Rocket fans are all over the spectrum. Most people love their friendship above all else. Awe:) 

Question 10: I ship Jessie and James because:

Main findings: Most fans love the chemistry and friendship they have between them whether it be in a deeply platonic sense or a romantic sense. Still, not everyone ships them. 

Question 11: Do you have any ships for Meowth (including a ship that includes an OC)?

Main findings: Most people have no ships for Meowth, some people gave funny responses, some responses are wholesome, and some responses are disturbing.

Question 12: Do you know who Mondo is?

Main findings: “What kinda lizard is this dude?” - a question I do not know how to answer & most people (58.9% at least) know him. He is from the Japanese-only radio drama. He is an assistant to Meowth, Jessie, and James in Kanto. 

Question 13: I read Team Rocket and/or Rocketshipping-related fanfiction...

Main findings: Almost every TR fan has read TR-related fanfiction with about 49.5% of people reading ‘sometimes’ or ‘frequently’. Some incentive to keep writing!

Question 14:  If I read Team Rocket/Rocketshipping-related Fanfiction, I will most likely choose this platform:

Main finding: Archive of Our own is where most people (70.5%) go first. Fanfiction.net is the second most common, with 47.4% choosing that platform. People also go on Wattpad, Pixiv, Quotev, Spirit, and Tumblr to read TR-related fanfiction. 

Question 15: I've written Team Rocket/Rocketshipping-related fanfiction...

Main findings: at least 68.4% of fans have never published a completed fanfic before. Oneshots seem to be the most commonly published. 

Question 16: I am actively writing Team Rocket/Rocketshipping-related Fanfiction...

Main finding: At least 9.5% of fans are actively writing fanfictions. this means we must up the speed and mass of production!

Question 17: Do you or have you ever Beta-read a Pokemon-themed fanwork? 

Main findings: Only about 7.4% of fans have beta-read. About 43.2% might beta in the future and about 44.2% have never beta-read and probably never will. 

(A beta-reader is someone who reads a fanfic before or right after it’s published and gives the writer tips on how to improve the story. Some betas check mostly spelling/grammar some do a lot more. Many writers love having betas and it is a compliment to most if you offer to beta a story for them.)

Question 18: I am also a fan of the following ships: 

Main findings: The most common ships people had alongside Rocketshipping was Pokeshipping with at least 48.4% shipping, Contestshiping with 34.7%,  Appealshipping with 28.4%, Palletshipping at 23.2%, and Amourshipping with 21.2%. Other popular ships include Diamondshipping, Diodesshipping, Gymshipping, Geekchicshipping, Wishfulshipping, and Pearlshipping. Several people brought up game/manga only ships and Neoshipping. About 20% of fans said that Rocketshipping was their only ship. Some of these ships I never heard of!

Question 19: What do you want fanfiction writers to include in their stories?

Main findings: Almost everyone had something to say. It was fun reading through these. People seem to like backstories, keeping the characters in-character, and making sure to include Meowth most of all:)

Question 20: Have you ever drawn and published and/or uploaded Team Rocket-related fanart (includes painting, sketches, pixel arts, and related mediums). 

Main findings: About 30.5% of fans made/make art, 28.4% have made art that they never published, about 24.2% have never made fanart and don’t think they ever will, and about 10.5% are in the process of making fanart. You should publish your art! Make it and send it to @teamrocketfanart.tumblr.com, please.

Question 21:   If I upload/publish art, it will most likely be on:

Main findings: Most fans would publish their art on Tumblr (78.9%). Other popular platforms include DeviantArt, Wattpad, Instagram, Twitter, Pixiv, Facebook, and forums. 5.3% of fans have a personal website or non-Tumblr blog that they upload onto. 

Question 22: When artists make Team Rocket-related Fanart, what do you like them to include?

Main findings: 58.9% of people believe that it is important for there to be a clear description of who did the art, 48.4% of people want Meowth included, 46.3% want there to be tags with the names of the people, Pokemon, and/or places depicted, 37.9% of people want tags/warnings for NSFW pieces, 35.8% of people want color, 32.6% of people want fanart that is ‘in-character’, 29.5% of people especially like SWF pieces (whereas 11.6% especially like NSFW pieces), about 26.3% have no preferences, and 24.2% like when the artist includes other members of Team Rocket. 

Question 23:  If I want to view Team Rocket-related fanart, I am most likely to...

Main findings: When looking for TR art, 75.8% of people are most likely to go to Tumblr, search from there, or browse, 49.5% of people go to Tumblr and visit the page of someone who frequently posts/reblogs Team Rocket fanart,  33.7% of people type what they want into a search engine, 30.5% of people goto DeviantArt, and other popular places to go are Twitter and Pixiv.

Question 24: About how many Team Rocket fans have you communicated with on the internet?

Main findings: Most fans (61.1%) have communicated with less than five other TR fans on the internet. 17.9% have communicated with between six and ten fans, and 12.6% have communicated with eleven to twenty. I think we all should communicate more. I’m open to chat (sometimes).

Question 34:  If Jessie and James had one or more kids what would be some of their attributes?

Main findings: At least 77.1% of TR fans agree that Meowth would be considered their ‘uncle’, 57.3% say that they would be friends with some of the twerps’ kids, 51% say that their names would start with ‘J’ and/or rhyme, 42.7% say that they’d be goofy characters, 33.3% say that they would be rivals and/or enemies with some of the twerps’ kids, 32.3% say that they would be part of the LGBTQIA+ community, 32.3% say that they would be more responsible than their parents,  31.3% say they’d be unplanned, and 27.1% say they’d be twins. People also commented on how they’d be spoiled (but not in a bad way) and they would have loads of love. Awe:) 

Question 35: Some fans have headcanons about non-obvious relationships (familial and otherwise) among canon characters. Do you have any? 

Main findings:  It seems most TR fans do not have additional headcanons, but among those that do, some of the more popular ones are: 

- Giovanni is Ash’s father. 

- Jessie and Jessiebelle are related.

- Giovanni and Delia were once a couple. 

- I like the one about Barry and Bianca being cousins, the idea of Jessie and Ash being half-siblings, and the idea of Lillie being related to James. I haven’t thought of those!

Question 36: Do Jessie, James, and/or Meowth ever become non-enemies with the twerps'?

Main findings: At least 59.4% of TR fans say that they would eventually become friendlier rivals and 40.6% say that they would all become friends. Overall, most people think that they would all lighten up a bit:)  

Question 37: Do Jessie, James, and Meowth ever catch Pikachu, bring him to the Boss, and get rewarded with loads of cash? 

Main finding: Pretty much everyone said no lol. 

Question 38: I usually watch (or have frequently watched) the Pokemon anime in: 

Main finding: Most TR fans on Tumblr (72.9%) have watched in the English dub. 51% watched in the original Japanese with or without English subtitles, and 18.8% watched in the dub version of a language other than English. The ‘other’ comments are interesting because most of them apply to me too:) 

Question 39: Do you have any LGBTQIA+ headcanons for Jessie, James, Meowth or any other of the canon TR characters? If yes, what are they? 

Main finding: Most people said ‘yes’ to some degree. All these responses were fun and interesting to read. I lot of people said bisexual, asexual, pan, and trans for some or all of the TRio. 

Question 40:  Do you have any other headcanons/opinions that weren’t brought up it the other parts of this survey?

Main finding: Most people said either ‘no’ or something like ‘a lot’. Many people headcanon them as neurodivergent in some way. Cool!

Question 41: Overall, I thought this survey was: 

Main findings: Many of you had super nice things to say.

Question 25: Via Tumblr, I would reblog, share, AND comment on TR-related art more often if:

Main findings: Most fans (64.6%) would reblog a piece of artwork that was better than most they had seen. Fans also are likely to reblog artwork that is from a fanwork they wrote and/or read and enjoyed, if they had communicated with the artist, they knew the artist in-person, the piece was SFW, if they followed the artist, and/or if the artist had a positive reputation. 

Question 26: I would review, follow/favorite, AND promote more TR-related fanfiction if: 

Main findings: Most fanfic readers (75%) prefer fics with well-developed plots. 70.8% of fans want characters that are well-written and diverse, 69.8% wand canon characters that are believable/in-character, and 63.5% want interesting headcanons. People also love romance, foreshadowing, puns, few spelling/grammar issues, stories that are easy to find, writers that share their headcanons, and relatable characters/situations. 

Question 27: What is James’ Surname?

Main findings: 29.2% of TR fans on Tumblr say that James’ surname is ‘Morgan’ and 36.5% have no clue. Another popular response is ‘Sasaki’ because in Japan, James is named after Kojirou Sasaki. 

Question 28: What is Jessie’s Surname?

Main findings: 49% of TR fans on Tumblr have no clue what Jessie’s surname is. Popular headcanons are ‘Miyamoto’, ‘Musashi’, ‘Tonaka’, and ‘Murrow’. Also, this question seemed to make people angry...I just wanna know your headcanons:)

Question 29: Who is Meowth's TRainer (see what I did there?)

Main findings: At least 78.1% of TR fans on Tumblr say that Meowth doesn’t have a trainer. 5.2% say that Giovanni is his trainer. No one commented on my brilliant pun:( 

Question 30: Would Jessie and James get married?

Main findings: At least 37.5% of TR fans on Tumblr say that they would and 34.4% say there’s a 50/50 chance. The ‘other’ responses are quite interesting. Also, Burnett married Kukui, not Kiawe...

Question 31: Some fans have this headcanon that Ash and the other characters aged over the course of the series. If you share this headcanon, what age do you assume Jessie and James were in season one?

Main findings: At least 51% of TR fans on Tumblr say that they were 25 in season one and still 25 by season twenty-one. 29.2% say they were between 17-20 in season one, and 12.5% say they were between ages 21-24. 

Question 32:  Some fans share the headcanon that the events in the Sun and Moon anime took place directly after the Johto era (because of the reappearance of Misty/Brock and the art style that makes the characters look younger than they did in the last few seasons). Do you share this headcanon? 

Main findings: This question also seemed to make some people angry...about 55.2% of fans on Tumblr disagree with this, most others find this believable, and I like the comment about the Simpsons-style timeline; I never thought of it that way:)

Question 33: Canonically, Miyamoto is Jessie's mother. Who is her father?

Main findings: At least 76% of people say he’s ‘unknown’. At least 21.9% say he was another TR agent. 

Your responses...not sure how I feel about them, but I like ‘some deadbeat, like everyone else’s dad’.
