I like paladins more than overwatch
Let me explain. At release I played Overwatch every day with my friends. It is an amazing game and was the first game that got me into team FPS shooters. I never played team fortress, the only other fps I really enjoyed prior was Natural Selection 2. Every night me and my friends would log into Overwatch and we frequently has 5 or 6 people in the group. The game was and still is a bucket of fun. However after about 2 months, my friends left to play other games. I wanted to play Overwatch but I found the game less fun playing solo.
At that time you had two options when you played overwatch. Competitive and Quick play. Quick play felt like there were too many trolls, and comp felt too serious for me.
It was around this time Paladins went into open Beta so I gave it a try. After playing mostly Paladins for the past few month I have found it to be a more enjoyable game than overwatch for a few reasons.
1. Customization through card systems.
Paladins has two different card systems that allow you to customize each champion. This add another level of strategy and progression as you play. One card system lets you create a loadout for each hero. You choose up to 5 cards per loadout and then add levels to each card untill you reach 12 points. Each extra level of a card boosts its effect up to a max of 4. Each hero comes with one basic loadout and the rest of the cards are aquired with gold you get for playing the game.
the second card system is a burn card type setup. Where you earn gold for performing in a match you can spend on these cards to increase different attributes. These bonus effects can be helpful in countering one sided team comps. Example: if the enemy team has only champions that do area damage you can max out blast shields to reduce all damage from aoe by 30%. Or if they have multiple healers you can max cauturize to reduce healing they can do by 90% whne you attack them.
The result is a lot more depth to games you play in paladins. Where every Reinhardt you face is functionaly the same . By contrast in Paladins the Fernando may have set up his loadout to be extra tanky by having extra health on his shields, or he could of built to be more aggressive with short cooldown on his fireballs.
2. Paladins allows you access to complete stats at the end of each match.
I will try to refrain from a long diatribe on why Overwatchs position on stats is very bad for a competetive game. I will say that I really feel that going over my stats at the end of each game gives me a good grasp of how the game went and how I performed compared to the rest of he team. Some games my healing may be crap and I can see that. In overwatch all I would see is oooh I got gold healing I must be doing great. Also I feel I have been flamed at many times due to the outcomes of Medals at the end of the match but not once has anyone had anything bad to say about my stats in Paladins.
3. Paladins has created a symmetrical payload game mode
Man this is such a huge factors to why paladins is so much fun to play. Their primary game mode is siege and it works like this.
Each siege map is a mirror on each side with a capture point in the middle. Both teams spawns open at the same time. When one team captures the objective a payload spawns and they attempt to push it to the end. You get 1 point for a capture, 1 point for successful push, and 1 point for defending unless you already have 3 points.
The result is you cannot tie in this game mode, which is a problem with payload in Overwatch currently.
4. Mobility
Ever character in this game has at least on mobility skill. Some have multiple. Also at the start of each match and each time you respawn you get a mount that allows you to ride quickly to whever you need to be on the mount. You can be knocked off your mount if you take any damage which flankers will often do to prevent you from reinforcing your team on the objective. This leads to some very high paces game play. After playing a solid month of paladins I went to play Overwatch and it just felt sluggish in comparison.
Overall I’m having a lot of fun playing paladins and the community feels a like more friendly than Overwatch. Its also free to play, so check it out.
First in A Class- Area 2
Zach took another division win at the Area 2 Championship match this last weekend. He shot the match well finishing 14th overall. Impressive feat for his second major match of the year. We are excited to watch Zach climb his way to the top wearing the Atlas green and black colors.
