And So it Begins
Okay so please bear with me I'm new to this whole blogging thing! To kick off this blog I wanted to give you all some background information on myself, schooling, and what led me here.I would have to say my inspiration to become a nurse lies heavily on my grandmother. This woman has raised me since I was 2, and she has been nothing short of amazing. I have not met anyone who loves their job as much as she does and that gives me hope. She’s been an awesome nurse for 30 years and is currently a house supervisor at our local hospital. She has pushed me further than I thought I could go and has held my hand every step of the way.As for school I currently have enough credits to qualify for an Associate’s Degree, but somehow can’t get priority to get into the Anatomy & Microbiology classes I need to apply to my local community college’s nursing programs. I have crashed every class I could yet still have had no luck; this is a huge problem in Southern California. I expressed this to my grandmother so she began asking around her hospital and I began looking up private universities. After visiting about 6 schools we both agreed on one.The school I had set my focus on offers a 20-month program that includes prereqs (or the option to transfer them in). Their admission process is a long one and is very nerve-wracking as they only accept 27 students per round. A little secret? I have a bit of anxiety, especially when it comes to doing things alone. Fast forward a little I was able to get and pass my drug test, turn in my school transcripts even though they were lost TWICE in transit, turn in all Financial Aid paperwork, background check, passed the TEAS V, and turn in my high school diploma. I did have an issue with my school on returning my phone calls, and getting everything done in a timely matter which did result in me missing the start date I had been set up for (February), but after a stressful interview I was offered to start in May (on the spot!).My date for orientation is April 29th, which I will then be fitted for my scrubs, given my books, laptop, and obviously fill out TONS of paperwork. In the meantime, I have been reading Anatomyand Physiology for Dummies, I purchased flashcards (have yet to open these will update a post with review), and have made a special project for myself. I have never taken an Anatomy or Physiology class so I’m not sure how helpful or in depth the for Dummies book goes, but it explains things in a way that are quite easy for me to understand along with definitions I know are valuable (such as anatomical positions). As for my special project? I often have trouble with doubting and second guessing myself, I’m working on it I promise! However, to try my hardest to prevent this I have counted the days of my program from day 1 to my last (643) and looked up motivational and inspirational quotes. I then found a template (thank you pinterest!) that allows me to put sticky notes on it and then print perfectly on to them (also helpful for studying). My crazy self, made 643 sticky notes with different quotes to reflect on for each day I’ll be in school to give me some extra UMPH.I’m now anxiously awaiting my orientation date!
