Ironischerweise “Heat of the Moment” von Asia.
How to cut your threads. This Guide contains 2 ways. Both will work for Chrome as well as Firefox in the same way. Tutorials with Screenshots and annotations are under the ‘Read More’ !!!
There is 2 ways to cut a Thread. The quick and dirty way, or the long but elegant way. Now first the (even though I don’t recommend it) fast and dirty way:
Click the red X, all old Reblogs disappear, make your post, add your tags: Done.
Sure, thats the easy way. You dont need any Plugins, it works by default and is done in seconds, but you loose all your old reblogs and I usually like to keep at least my partners old post around. If you feel the same? Here is the long and fancy way:
Stage #1: Getting the Parts
For both Firefox and Chrome, start by visiting this blog: https://new-xkit-extension.tumblr.com/
At the top of the Blog is a Download for X-Kit, a small Browser Plugin that allows you to access some otherwise in-accessible functions of tumblr’s API. No, you are not ‘Hacking the Tumblrs’ you are merely using what they already offer, it’s just not part of tumblr Default UI.
Disclaimer: I do not Own XKit, I do not Program XKit. Using ANY and ALL third party applications comes at your own risc and I am not responsible for anything.
For Chrome it will redirect you to the Chrome Web Store, where you can click ‘Add to Chrome’ and it will automatically download and install the Plugin.
For Firefox it will lead you to github, where you can download the most recent .xpi file (Screenshot made 5/5/17 you might read this later and it might have received an update since then and you will have a different Release-Number)
With Firefox, you will need to manually execute the downloaded file to install the Plugin, aside from that the Process will be identical.
Stage #2: Installing XKit and Editable Reblogs
XKit will - after installing - immediatly initialize itself, once you go to tumblr.com It will then pop up with the following window:
If you are signed into tumblr (which I am not right now, since I made a new Chrome-Profile to show this off) it will pop it up in front of your Dash. This is FINE and has to happen this way. Simply click on ‘Refresh Page and start using XKit’
Now, after the Refresh and in my case signing into an Account, it now looks something like this:
This is already the hardest part done, really. You can click on the little added X-Kit icon in the top right (conveniently X-Kit is already pointing it’s little flag at it!) to continue to the step, which will look a little intimidating, but is really easy to get behind if you don’t rush.
XKit by default will offer you a First-User Tour. I recommend taking it, and reading it. It’s useful, but I will not show it of for the matter of this tutorial, since we are after one specific function that XKit offers!
Your screen should look something like this:
Next step you click on the “Get Extensions” Tab at the bottom. This will open up the Add-Menu. Essentially: X-Kit allows you to install certain components seperately. Meaning, you can add as many or as few functions to X-Kit as you would like, so if you want to add more stuff of your own later, you can do so step by step, without overwhelming yourself, by adding too much at once!.
In the now opened menu, you will find a search-bar at the top left. You are looking for “Editable Reblogs”. Searching for this will find the exact Extension that we are right now looking for!
Now all you need to do is click ‘Install’ and X-Kit will do all the work here for you. It will install it, as well as keep it up to date! Again, there is many more things X-Kit can do for you, but today we only go for this one thing in specific, so you can simply click onto tumblr again, which will close the X-Kit window.
Stage #3: Actually cutting your thread
Now we get to the actual cutting part. I didn’t have a long thing sitting around to show it off, but I found a small exchange I had with @thesnowbirdschild (Follow them, they are great) a while back. It was just us goofing around, but it will do as an example.
First of all: DO NOT PANIC! This does not mean it’s broken, it’s more a PSA from the people that made X-Kit. Tumblr a while back changed how they display posts. This merely explains that since that change, using Editable Reblogs on this post, will display the Post the way they USED to be displayed. (You will see in a moment what that means.) Simply click OK and all is well.
Now, this picture illustrates the ‘Old Way’ and the ‘New Way’ that tumblr displays posts. The Blue-Box marks the Old Way, this is what it looks like AFTER a thread has been cut with Editable Reblogs. The Green-Box marks the New Way that Posts are displayed.
The Red Box marks our next step: Click on the Pencil inside the Circle, to change the Post into an editable Post:
You will notice that now the Entire Post is in the OLD Format. If you did not use tumblr in the Era that posts looked like that it can be a bit hard to understand, but it is simple enough - The further set right and higher up the post is, the chronologically older it is.
Now to “Cut” the Thread, you can simply move your cursore to the End of the Last Post you want to cut, and drag it up along the Line that marks that Post, highlighting all the text along the way. Essentially highlighting the Text with your Cursor like this:
Now, all it takes is pressing Backspace or Delete (Whichever you prefer, and it will delete all the marked posts in one go, so our example post now looks something like this:
Now you can simply add your own post to the bottom as usual, add your tags and press Reblog! I am saving showing you this step, since you can probably figure that part out yourself.
And that’s the “Fancy” way of cutting your threads.
Method 1 - As harsh as it is - still works. I am assuming you’d write Shortform on Mobile (if you are writing longform on Mobile, you are some sort of Demigod or Insane-Person anyways) Just go for a few back&forths, then cut it. I am unaware of any more advanced way to do it on mobile, but again: Version 1 works, I literally just tested on on my own.
