I’m taking a shower. The front door’s unlocked so just come in :)
Xx Hero
———
Hero wrapped a towel around herself, half-expecting Villain to be in her room when she rounded the corner. Surely, he had already seen her text. He was probably waiting for that very text to arrive while sitting in his new car, fiddling with the radio.
She tucked her wet strands of her behind her ear before grabbing the knob of the bathroom door. Eventually, there’d come a time when the towel would come off and she’d have to put real clothes on, though maybe she wouldn’t put more clothes on.
Everything would depend on what wine Villain brought her. Furthermore, it’d depend on how much he let her drink. A whole bottle sounded satisfactory. After all, this was a celebration.
“Reporting to you live from Town Square,” Hero said as she began her trek down the hall. “I’m Lizzie Bordaff here to share some breaking news. Behind me is a scene of fire and devastation, but not all hope is lost.”
Twisting the knob to her bedroom, Hero prepared herself for the rest of the her line. It had only been televised a million times in the last twenty-four hours since the news had initially happened. “For behind me is the building which our beloved hero has vanquished the villain of our-”
Hero’s towel nearly dropped to the floor. She clutched it just before it slipped, but that disabled her from covering the gasp which escaped her lips.
“Don’t act so surprised. The front door was practically calling my name.”
There, in Hero’s chair, at her desk, sat the sheriff, Supervillain. “It always disappointed me- the attention Villain received.”
“Where is he?” Her hands shook whilst her hands tightened even more against her towel.
“Not dead, as the two of you wanted everyone to think.” He stood now, eyes casted on the floor, then on Hero’s eyes. “Not much happens in this city that I don’t know about. I’m sure you know this.”
Being the sheriff? Hero could have guessed that, but even still, the whole public believed Villain’s death; how could Supervillain have known any differently? The plan was perfectly executed.
Gritting her teeth, Hero demanded, “Just tell me where he is.”
This only caused Supervillain to smile, lips barely splitting to reveal teeth stained by coffee and tea- how could someone so horrible live the luxury of beans and leaves? “Or what?” he asked of her. “Will you flash me, Hero? I would like that.”
Sick. If that line were delivered by Villain, she might have blushed. No, she absolutely would have blushed, but this wasn’t Villain. This was so far from her lover.
“There’s an extension in my office, down at the station”- Supervillain stalked towards Hero, still in her doorway- “where we keep the worst of the worst criminals.” He took a short breath. “I don’t think you want to follow Villain there, sweetheart.”
She hated how she jumped at that word, and again how she jumped at the palm on her cheek. “Then what would you suggest I do?” Clearly, there was a reason the sheriff was here, taunting her as such. “What do you want from me?”
“I thought you’d never ask.” His thumb drove in circles on Hero’s cheek. He fished in his pocket. “Wear this.”
A ring. A golden band with a heart engraved into the metal. “No.”
“No? I thought you’d want it. After all, it was in Villain’s pocket before it was mine. Don’t you want this reminder of him?” Supervillain chuckled shortly after. “I don’t know what it would have mattered. A dead man can’t marry a living woman, now can he? Symbolic. Pathetic.”
“If you’re only here to mess with me, you can leave.”
Another gasp escaped Hero as her towel was yanked and she was sent flying into her enemy’s chest. A whine rose in her throat. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to prevent the fearful tears which were building up.
“Not so feisty anymore, are we?”
Yes, she was scared now. Shaking, even. Things wouldn’t be the same when she was the one on the offense, when she was the one grabbing collars- or towels- and pulling the other around. Oh, there were so many things you could do when you were the one with the element of surprise. For now, Hero remained silent.
“There’s a press conference tomorrow, as I know you’re aware. Wear the ring.” Before Hero could be the one to ask ‘Or what,’ he said, “Otherwise I might have to give you a video tour of that extension room, of the bloody statue behind the curtains. Do yourself a favour, wear the ring, save his life. Can you do that for me?”
As she thought, about the consequences of following through with the orders she was given, and the consequences of not, Supervillain tightened his hand impossibly more.
“Yes,” she squeaked, “yes, I’ll wear the ring.”
