Some thoughts for a Holy Grail War-type fic I've been thinking about for AQW for the last few months.
The premise largely being that 7 of the existing elemental champions (+ close enoughs) summon one of their predecessors (or alternative near enoughs) as part of a training challenge issued by Varga. Ostensibly this is intended as a training exercise with each pair competing for a wish granting device as per the typical format of a holy grail war.
It should be no surpise that it escalates and fall apart very quickly, not that the local war godess is upset by that.
The Master-Servant pairs that I'm considering are:
Illaria, Master of Archer (Gaheris) Tara, Master of Caster (Ledgermayne) Galanoth, Master of Lancer (Tyndarius) Gravelynn, Master of Berserker (Lynaria) Rhubarb, Master of Rider (????) Artix, Master of Saber (Uantaa [DF import]) Abel, Master of Avenger (Glace)
I feel like most champions would only really fall into Saber or Caster naturally with any dragon riders like lynaria qualifying for Rider. Assassin is the harder to pick for (As in I genuinely can't think of anyrelevant characters for it) so I just dumped it for an Extra Class.
I have considered the idea of adding drakath to the mix, but he'd just end up summoning his mother which would massively escalate the story. A summoned QoM would probably just restart her saga again.
Tyndarius is more less here so that he can be killed off again he's the the perfect victim for a lancer dying joke, complete with a noble phantasm that just ends up killing him. (Spoiler, it involves gaining in power until he apporaches the time he was the Fire Avatar, at which point he just dies.)
Gaheris is Archer just so I can fit him in somewhere, and who knows, maybe he knows some archery that we never learned about.
I had considered Lynaria for Saber but i think berserker emphasising Astero's corrosive influence is an interesting direction. Sort of taking cues from a hypothetical Astero wins world, and her masacre of the Vaughns. I also feel like if anyone is going to force a berserker summon it would be the Shadowscythe.
Rhubarb I've got no real clue about. He probably just summons a sailor and they spend most of the story doing their own thing.
Ledgermayne is not a champion but I felt like with the Einsof and the mana plane, that they'd be an intersting include.
