THOUGHTS UNDER CUT AGAIN

i tried translating the art technique from my study to an original piece a few days after. i think there's definitely some things lost in translation due to the roundness/density of muscle in the figure i chose to draw (pose by @adorkastock btw i just rounded it out for the character). it's also worth noting that the artist i'm trying to emulate (cardo) works in blender a lot, and might have a better sense of weight and form for it, whereas my placement of color came a bit more randomly (though i was referencing muscle charts a lot, the fat placement skewed it a bit). i like the color composition and the weight/translucence of the fabric for the most part, i futzed with those a lot.

Technique Testing with Ed

These are the brushes that I used. Default "Soft Blend", "Round Brush", and "Flat Brush". Plus a version of the Flat Brush that I added a taper to, and a version of the 6B Pencil that I messed with "grain" for (scale, depth, brightness properties). Note: my custom brushes take up stupid RAM. Pencil Baby laggs soooo bad.

Fill a layer with low opacity color

Erase where the light hits (or less pigmented areas. I couldn't decide.)

Add detail with the darkest mix of the layers (purple in this case) and light.

Paint every color that isn't there already…See, this is why I told me not to word this like a tutorial. It's just misleading. But did me listen? Noooooo.

Um…paint? use a super low opacity brush with fleshy flesh tones to pretend the sketchy line work isn't there.

Liquify to correct proportions. Ask friends why color looks muddy. Friends may point out that Ed's cheek is pretty close in value to the background. Bring some blue lighting back with a low opacity fluffy brush (layer mode: color dodge)

Go "eh, I've learned what I wanted from this." and post it on Tumblr. 😋 Actually, though, I am really happy with what I figured out here. The underlying drawing isn't working for me, but I'm super proud of the colors 🌈

So...if anyone is still interested in my art, this is what I’ve been working on. 2-3 weeks of about 30 mins a day most days....trying the burnishing technique with colored pencils for the first time. So. Many. Layers.

If anyone remembers the beautiful, Van Gogh like pictures we got of Jupiter a few years ago...this is being done off of one of the photos. The top section will be from another one of the photos.

Hoping to be done within a week or so...

for this one i didn’t allow myself to color pick anything, it’s all eyeballed. some things i noticed were the initial shapes (i started with a thumbnail approach) were hard for me to block in, as if my eye couldn’t focus on what i was seeing. so i scrapped that and ended up just going for it, and once i sort of put together the correllation between muscle and the shape and placement of the color, i started “getting it”. i allowed myself ~1 hour to do as much as i could. about 4/5ths through i realized my brush texture wasn’t super accurate and did switch to an oil brush for more of the wispier detail, but it was late at that point.

overall very enjoyable, and i highly recommend checking them out because allllll their art is this tasty. i’m definitely going to try their style for study again. soon.
