Help A Friend Out
@techxbillionaire
Nate paces the galley, trying to dispell the nerves. Ray’s a pretty cool guy and he and Nate get along really well. Nate’s never really had friends like the Legends. No, before his friends were librarians and archeologists and palentologists and anthropologists. Mostly the boring ones. No Allen Grants in his life.
But now!
Now he’s got superpowers! And a superhero team!
And oh god, he’s got superpowers. And a superhero team. And his mother is going to die. His father is going to either skin him (as if he could tch) or have an aneurysm, and so they can’t know. They can never, ever find out. Also for their own safety since his real identity is sort supposed to be secret. So, nope. His parents can’t know.
So he needs a buffer. He needs-
“Ray!” The galley doors open and Nate spins to face The Atom. His best friend and, according to Mick and Sara, his idiot accomplice. They’re just jealous because Ray ad Nate have such a great connection. Sure Ray and Mick are bros or partners or trying to be or whatever, but Nate understands Ray and Ray understands Nate in ways the others just don’t get. Well, except for Jax. He’s practically part of their duo almost making them a trio… and yeah he really needs to focus. “Want some help with the cooking? Look.” His skin goes to steel in the blink of an eye. He’s been practicing and yeah, he is pretty proud of his progress thank you very much! “No hot mits needed for this guy!”
The steel sheen fades and he grins. Not only will Ray be a buffer for Nate, but Nate then gets to spend the holiday with his best friend and his best friend won’t have to figure something else out. Nate would have asked Ray to come home with him anyway, knowing there isn’t much waiting for him in Stat City. The only tricky part is pitching the whole “be my fake boyfriend through the New Year” aspect in just the right light so he’ll get a yes and not a no.

Time travel – and the anomalies and paradoxes that came with it – was really starting to grind his gears. He’d signed on to this carnival ride for the “opportunity” it offered (timeless treasures and priceless artifacts that could be swiped at the right moment to become monumentally valuable), but had come to his senses when the reality of what could become of the world had sunk in in a dystopian Star City circa 2046. Mick had taken longer to hop on the band wagon but even he eventually realized what exactly was at stake. One man’s worldview might be another man’s view in the now as it were. Len was all Mick had. They had certainly had their differences, but all of that abandonment and Kronos nonsense was behind them now. Mick didn’t want to be in a world where Leonard and Lisa Snart didn’t exist and Len didn’t want to live in world in which his precious though small family was constantly in danger because of Vandal Savage and his insanity.
Funny, but true: history always repeated itself.
Interestingly enough, history – like time itself – was dependent on individuals and choices. Meaning: though nothing they’ve done so far has in anyway greatly affected the timeline… they still know they did it, making it their history.
So, while the timeline had remained intact after they had deposited their first snatched younger selves back where they belonged, the Time Masters had seen fit to send out The Drover after their teenage selves. Why specifically teenagers and why specifically The Drover neither Mick nor Rip could do more than speculate… the only thing they did know was that the Time Masters had ordered only strikes on those that were not removed from the timeline last time at set ages. That meant Ray – he’d been taken to a hospital not abducted – and Len – his infant-self had been no age when he’d been abducted – and, of course, Martin and Jax.
Len was less than pleased.
Stealing his fifteen year old self in the middle of the night like kidnappers left a sour taste in his mouth. For one, Lisa would be unprotected in an unstable timeline. For two, his fifteen year old self was…just starting to harden to life’s miseries. He was a little crafty, a little talented, sharp-minded enough to be a problem when he wanted, and charmingly adorable enough to get out of a problem when he wasn’t quick-witted enough to avoid the problem all together. Having someone like himself on board this ship at a thinking age was… going to be a problem. Len desperately hoped those amnesia pills worked on Eidetic memories… or he would know this was all coming every time he looked in the mirror from the age of thirty-three and older.
“So! To review the plan: Mr. Snart, you and Mr. Rory will stay aboard the ship. I know that it’s going to be nearly impossible for either one of you to leave Lisa Snart behind, but rest assured, as I have kept every promise so far, your younger selves will be returned to carry on with your life. Now we’ll pick up the young Dr. Stein first, then Mr. Jackson’s younger self and then we’ll swing by for the young Dr. Palmer and lastly Mr. Snart. Is everyone clear now?”
Expendable
The so-called team filtered out once everyone was satisfied with their almost unanimous decision to attempt to reform Mick. The bitter side of him wanted to just be done with the whole ordeal and put Mick down for real like a rabid animal, but when he’d said he thought Mick was a lost cause... well, in all honesty that was the hurts talking. Len pressed himself hard into the little alcove of the wall and waited. Rip gave him one last glance over his shoulder and then vanished through the doorway.
It was the only acknowledgment he would likely receive from them.
After all... they probably thought he had this coming in some way...
Some team indeed.
Not one of them, not a single one of them, had asked after his well-being. None of them. No shocked, “Oh my god, Snart, you’re hand!” No sympathetic, “What happened?” Not one god damned acknowledgement. They were more shocked and appalled over Mick’s turncoat alter ego than that Leonard, who had sacrificed everything from his best friend to his own fucking hand, to be a part of them and keep them safe, to do the right thing... was right there. In pain. Barely on his feet.
Well, fuck ‘em.
He didn’t need them. Oh, but they needed him. This was why he didn’t play well with a team he hadn’t hand picked himself. This was why he didn’t do the whole hero thing. This was how he’d survived for so long despite the world he’d been born into. He’d risked shock - hell, he’d fucking risked freezing his goddamned nuts off if he’d slipped up utilizing the cold gun with his feet - and potentially death just to stop Mick from hurting them. To stop them from killing Mick.
Ingrates. All of them.
Every last one.
Ray was so caught up in his difficult and dramatic relationship with the Hawk Goddess that he couldn’t see past the end of his own nose. Jax and Stein were both self-centered assholes, but of the two he’d have thought Jax would have shown some kind of empathy for a debilitating injury given his knees.
Not a word.
Sara... was still a bit lost in her time with the League (as it turned out). She was no stranger to sacrifice and injury, but he didn’t even get some kind of commiserating acknowledgement from her. Kendra was wrapped up in her want of things she wasn’t supposed to want like a selfish little princess...
He was so fucking done trying. It was back to the original plan. Steal all the things he could throughout time. Help them enough to keep them happy. If they defeated Savage in the meantime all the better.
...but...
But that wasn’t true, was it?
He already knew that he’d just keep trying despite the fact that - to everyone on the team now - he was expendable. They’d gone after Sara, who had been safely tucked away in Nanda Parbat, rather than come for Len, who was at the merciless hands of Kronos.
Len glanced up into the red lit glass room. Mick was staring at him. The sight was like a bucket of ice water over Len’s head and he turned, pushing off the wall and heading out of the room. Every movement brought pain and no little bit of dizziness.
At least Gideon would be of some consolation. She probably had at least something to stabilize him and take the edge off the pain.
Simple, morbid curiosity, all-too-human but irresistible, had him gingerly untucking his throbbing wrist stump from within his jacket. He sagged against the hall wall about twenty-three steps away from the room Mick was being held in and simply looked. It made his stomach turn and his heart flutter erratically to see the blackened flesh edged in paled skin. He supposed it would end up just one more scar to add to the many already revealing his life’s history across the planes of his body. The throbbing was stronger the longer he looked at it, his blood pressure rising as his mind strained to accept the absence. The loss. So, he set his empty ended forearm into his other palm and cradled the limb to his chest again, tucking the gruesome end back into his coat where he wouldn’t have to see it.
With effort, he pushed away from the wall and began to make his way towards MedBay again.
