In 1809, artist John Constable’s patron, Henry Greswold Lewis, saw in a jewelry store window on Bond Street a brooch containing a tiny portrait of “the human eye and enough of the forehead to know the likeness.” Enchanted, Lewis wrote Constable to request that the artist paint the eye of his 13 year old ward Mary, with whom the widower possessed a somewhat unhealthy obsession. Lewis wished to set her eye as a stick pin which he could proudly wear. There is no record of Constable accepting this cringe-worthy commission. ....................................................
