Delina.

I took Delina out for a short lesson. After our last one, she was apologetic. It wasn’t her fault, it was mine--I pushed her a little too hard. I’ve forgotten what it’s like to struggle with the simpler things. It dawned on me later that perhaps I’ve become the sort of teacher that pushes her students to breaking point, leaves them to fall and recover on their own. I’ll never know how many hours I spent passed out on Mavern’s concrete floor, I just remember the agony of being told ‘again, again, again’ until every part of me ached. 

But he never let me rest. There was punishment if I did, even if it was because my body ceased to function. There was always punishment when I came to.

I don’t want to be that sort of teacher to Delina, but I also don’t want to go so easy on her that she learns nothing. The line is so thin. 

She wants to learn to use a sword and she will, but she will learn it as an elementalist. I won’t accept her learning a non-magical weapon as a means of avoiding harnessing her magical talents. She practiced today with a conjured rock sword, getting used to both the weight and swing of the weapon and training her earth magic to hold it together. I think it’s a tidy exercise that will suit both tasks, and I’ve encouraged her to conjure rock daggers to practice with in the mean time.

When she’s more capable, she’ll be able to create and maintain swords of her own. They’re not much use in an actual battle, but for sparring and strengthening they suffice. 

I’m looking forward to seeing how she progresses. It’s been a while since I allowed myself to really teach someone, I’ve been afraid to since the catastrophe that was Teion. Mentors have such great influence, I am not someone who should have that. Taking Teion as a student was a mistake.

And yet. I want to be that teacher. The good one. I want to treat someone the way that Mama Rosa and Lord Sebelle treated me, I want to guide them even if I am the worst guide possible. 

Magic is what I know, though. I’d best stick to just that.

Spinach.

Teion came to visit me at Cathal today. Not exactly my brightest idea, asking the world's most naive sapling to come out to an active war zone for the purposes of seeing me, his injured mentor, but the injury limits my mobility and the poor kid gets bored in the Grove. I don't blame him, I would too, but I want to keep him in a safe place for as long as I can. At least until I can impress on him how dangerous it is outside, and prepare him for what he's going to find. Even though he's been assaulted by courtiers before, he still has that wide-eyed innocent look going on and the world is going to crush him. He's scared of the dark. What would happen if he saw half of what I see in a run through Lion's Arch?

Azaria visited as well, which was good. Teion likes her, and she offered to take him out to Kryta for a while. She knows how bad the courtier threat is, and because we haven't told Teion about the recent attack (or the fact that Keiranon and Oaken are currently in courtier hands) it's been hard to really explain to the kid why it's so important he stays somewhere safe. Having him go to Kryta with Azaria solved a few problems.

One being that there was no one in the Grove to make sure he didn't leave. The wardens are busy with too many saplings to watch mine, he stayed there only under my threat. It's also an adventure for him. Something to keep him occupied in a way that the Grove won't. Plus a chance to meet others and maybe experience some things that help him grow up. 

But before he went, he said he had a present for me. This was a surprise to start with--I've done nothing deserving of presents and my awakening day isn't until next season. Then he hands me this little, scraggly, fern hound pup. Introduces it as Spinach, and he is mine.

As if that wasn't sweet enough of him, Teion says that he got me the puppy because he saw how upset I was when Leafy wasn't able to stay with me anymore. As if he knew how much that pup had helped me in the nights I was alone and wanted me to be okay again.

Spinach is adorable. He loves to cuddle, he's been sleeping up on the bed with me and gets very frustrated if I wake too early. He's still a bit upset and confused about the change in his life, but he's taken to me, he follows me about Cathal as I organise the wardens, yaps at their ankles and pretends like they're afraid of him. He hasn't made Aernthys cry, so he can't be too scary yet.

He's exactly what I needed at what has become a very difficult time. 

Fuck--I have to go. He's chewing my damn boots.

Maybe this won't work.
