If Akira Kurosawa and Quentin Tarantino teamed up to design indie games… this would be the masterpiece of that grand partnership. Officially described as a “lightning-fast Bushido brawler,” Samurai Gunn is a 2D 8-bit local multiplayer arena game. Two to four players take control of samurai, each sporting a slick katana and a gun with three bullets per life. Judging from previews, Teknopants seems to have discovered the perfect blend of frantic intensity and reflexive precision. The sheer speed of the gameplay is beyond the capabilities of normal internet connections, making the local multiplayer feature the most thrilling aspect of the game. Sitting with friends on your couch playing a video game together is something of a nostalgic experience nowadays, as that feature has been removed from the vast majority of games in favor of games which allow people to compete online anonymously. Few things are more exciting than shouting in unison with your buddies at some “sick” skills one of you has brilliantly demonstrated on the screen in front of you. While some say the PC version still needs some minor polish, the approaching release of the game on PS4/Vita will likely see the improvements called for and make for an exceptional, distinctive, and stylish release.
