Here is the 8-page scanlation of "Docteur Yoyo et Mister Monstre" from issue #39 of French magazine "TELEJunior" in July 1980.

OBSERVATIONS:

- I feel like this comic makes the least sense.

- Yoyo having a glass of motor oil is pretty cute. It seems weird that Alex would be given a beer while on the job. The original text I translated was "Un demi."

- What's so special about platinum screws specifically? Why not just say "screws"? Platinum screws were also mentioned in the pilot comic.

- How would indigestion make Yoyo call the captain "grandmother"?

- The town's name is spelled 2 different ways.

- The first 2 comics had signs written in English, as appropriate for the California setting, but this and "Yoyo...napping" features French signs, like the inn (auberge).

- Geez, how many times is something weird gonna make Yoyo fly in these comics?

- It's kinda weird for Yoyo to call Alex "Holmes." He always calls him "Alex" in the show.

- Seriously?? The professor isn't going to question Yoyo flying and reacting to the other robot??

- I guess Julot is the robot's name? It's hard to discern proper nouns when everything is written in caps.

OBSERVATIONS

This is from TELEjunior #41.

So, Cpt. Harry Sedford is a lieutenant named Quentin now and Officer Moon is his secretary?? I mean, she did take dictation in the show, but she was more than a secretary...

If I could write, I totally wanted to give Yoyo the ability to analyze things with his mouth, so that’s cool, though I would’ve just had him randomly lick stuff and watch Alex try to make up an excuse if anyone saw it 😅.  

In this universe, Sedford knows that Alex knows that Yoyo is a robot. Doesn’t that take away some of the tension? I wonder if this story could’ve worked without Sedford tagging along...

If the show had had the budget, I wonder if they would’ve made Yoyo fly too, or would that be too outlandish? In ep 13, the RC airplane makes him just run around with his arms out. I think I saw a wire when he gently fell onto the ground.

This song about "l'hirondèlle du printemps” doesn’t seem to be from anything, so I guess we can count composing music among Yoyo’s many talents. 🎶

After crashing the car, Alex shouts a series of polite exclamations that make no sense in English when translated literally, like “name of a small man” (nom d'un petit bonhomme) and “name of a pipe” (nom d'une pipe). Since those are minced oaths, I picked English ones. Who knows, maybe Pete’s the small man! 😉

What the hell is propelling that arm?!

So, um, how the hell are they going to explain Yoyo’s arm flying around the station in front of everybody? Trick question-- the story ends before that can happen!

Groan! The arm puns...😫 This was hard to translate... There’s “Les bras m'en tombent!”, “Va falloir jouer des coudes!”, “Jeux de mains, jeux de vilains!”, “Yoyo est un fier-à-bras!”, “Yoyo ne baisserait pas les bras!”, “Je passe la main!”, “T'avais perdu la première manche mais tu as gagné la seconde!” Yet French lacks the perfect “long arm of the law,” so I was proud of myself for swapping that in for “fier-à-bras” (”braggart,” which doesn’t make sense in the original context).

“Yoyo!!!...Hold me in your arms!...” Hear that? That’s the sound of the S.S. Rule Thirty-Four leaving port 😜.

How is Yoyo controlling that RC plane?! Since when can he perform mechromancy wirelessly?

I recently discovered that there’ve been a few H&Y comics. BBC put out an annual in 1978 which featured some comics, while France’s “TELEjunior” magazine (#37-42) featured at least 6 short comics in 1980. Number 38 contains the 8-page story "Cris Et Hurlements” (Scream and Shout).

This is my “scanlation” of a short comic from the French magazine “TELEjunior” #38. I used Google Translate and had to get creative a few times when there were big gaps in the bubbles due to the French being much longer than the English translations.

OBSERVATIONS:

I’ve never seen so many ellipses in one work! 

It’s neat that the background details are in English, as appropriate to the California setting. However, it seemed odd to have 2 Americans talking about a 2000-km oil change, so I translated it to 1000 miles to seem more natural. 2000 km is actually 1242.742 mi, but who changes oil at a weird number like that?

When arriving at the scene, Alex originally says “Hou, là, là!” Never knew that was a thing French people actually said. 🤔 Google says it means “Wow.” I went with “Holy cow!” because it’s roughly the same length and shares a couple of letters. 

I think it’s funny that they are inconsistent about which direction to hold the remote and how many rows of buttons it has.

Yoyo didn’t call Alex “chef” (boss) in the show, so that seems kind of weird. They had more of an equal partnership. 

No idea what “wakadou” is supposed to be. It’s weird since the rest of the music is in English. 

Remember the cat that got turned into a drone (the Orvillecopter)? That’s what the last panel reminds me of! 😅 What could that button possibly be?
