Have you ever been on a long run where you started out great, felt exhausted ¾ of the way through, but were able to give it all you had once you knew the end was near? Maybe you, like many people, have not only experienced this feeling once, but it is normal for most of your timed workouts. This phenomenon is a growing theory called “teleoanticipation.” The main idea is that our bodies have the ability to reverse calculate the effort needed to perform a task. This may be why it feels nearly impossible to maintain a truly consistent effort; our brains make us slow down part of the way through to ensure that we have enough resources for later. Biologically, this makes perfect sense. Our bodies perform these types of calculations all of the time in regards to food, sleep, sex, etc. This theory could also explain why it is more difficult to complete a workout when you don’t know how long it will last...
