I’m listening to Telepathy Tapes and I’m on the 2nd episode.

My training is in behavioral and computational neuroscience. I am, for lack of a better term, a psychic, in a way that defies my own logic and trained assumptions. Yes I have physical evidence because I am a HUGE numbers nerd and I deeply enjoy the practice of validation. I call it The Feel, as I am confident it has to do with the oldest and most sensitive of the sensory modalities: touch

I am also a science communicator. I write and illustrate STEAM everything and have trained dozens of science writers. I have strong sentiments about science journalism and its persistent problems of people without any science training speaking to loudest about science research.

This is my critique—a rant to a dear friend that is too long for text format.

Ok. I’ve pinned it down. I thought, “damn I wish this was Mary Roach, someone who knows the science language.” I think the science journalism is not even novice but flagrantly and arrogantly undisciplined. The host thinks she has the competence and skill to be a science reporter and frankly she does not.

So a semiconductor builds up on fillings, making them into a transistor and generating electrical signals which the brain then picks up, but she ways that demonstrates how the human body can tune into things?! What?????? That body was augmented and we’re just gonna *fart sound* “meh” that shit?? Not even explain to your audience why you mentioned it was a semiconductor in the first place? Bringing hella lights into ANY autistic home? The arrogance of “this will be fine” slash the White identity narrative of “my experience is very likely yours” shouts over consent, carefulness, cultural sensitivity. The leaps of assumption with abandon. This is what I mean by undisciplined science journalism. It is a plight.

On the science side, the reason the research doesn’t stand up is not the communicators touching during typing, it’s because Powell doesn’t have enough field experience to think how to control for it or measure and look for correlation. (Re: touching & communicating/ideomotor biz) Like why the fuck did they jump to eeg when an emg is cheaper, more elegant and more accurate (and ahem more inclusive)?

Realizing the nag me has allowed me to enjoy it more. Akil’s story is great and thats certainly where the journalism shines. The discussion of the Hill is creepily familiar. Like…man we gotta talk in person but I feel like [LOL REDACTED]. This has made me more curious to dive back in to The Feel as I call it.

Also have you seen Only Murders in The Building? The exactness of the podcast stereotype/voice is a fuckin riot. It’s great.

I feel a deep thirst for Blackness in this story it’s crazy. Like I would connect more if there was any hint of melanin in their group/crew. It’s a palpable feeling, a sterility. It makes me confident there is a huge part of the story, like a tome, that is missed.

It’s a good listen. I think of the Closer to Truth series (which struggles from the same anti-melanin affliction). I enjoy all the feelings it evokes, frustration to joy to a feeling of almost knowing. It’s certainly not the same experience as mine but it got hints and flavors for sure.

I'm five episodes in since yesterday and every episode has covered me in chills and brought me to tears.

It's bringing so much realization to me personally, but also just feels so important for the human experience.
