Soundgarden - “Black Rain”

I’ve had Soundgarden rolling this morning and afternoon, sort of an antidote to the mostly chill stuff I’ve been listening to for the past couple of weeks. This song came on and I was floored all over again, and I remembered the first time I heard it.

They were the second guest on Conan’s then-new TBS show, and they’d just gotten back together after 13 years away. And in that time, I managed to lose track of them and, while never banishing them, just sort of letting them fall by the wayside, that realm apart from “active listening,” I guess. They come on, blasting through a new song, with Chris Cornell in total fucking godhead mode, and it was over. I was back, fully and completely. I couldn’t believe how good and mean and terrifying they still sounded. And that continued for another seven years.

It should have gone on longer, but that’s one of those where there aren’t any answers or second chances. Anyway. Listen, enjoy, remember and be good to each other.
