When did it happen? Was it a singular event that captivated Kaylee's heart? It couldn't have been. Even in the times when her mind was shrouded in shadow there he was by her side. To call that love would be a lie but he was made for her, and she was made for him. That's how it was presented. They were unstoppable to say the least. She'd seen a rage in his eyes turn to something different, something of an awe as he look to her in all her infectious glory. A look that Kaylee adored. No person before him had ever made her feel equal. They mocked her, manipulated her, used her. But not Athan. Sure, he was rough around the edges. He didn't understand a lot of Kaylee's quirks. But he was a quick study. He learned fast what it meant to be her treasured lover and despite the havoc he waged against everyone else, he was more careful with her heart than anyone before him.

Actual Footage of Lady Death trying to fuck with Thanos more, featuring Athan and Kaylee
@telipatia plotted AU shit
For weeks Kaylee had been bound to a bed. Her abdomen flayed open from the assault. A heartbeat away from death. Every movement took her breath away but she refused to stay still. There was the new baby. So small and helpless and Kaylee would be damned if she wasn't going to hold him. Not after the hell of having him ripped from her womb.
Despite the protests, Kaylee made sure to take walks even if it was just a trip around the room to keep from going stir crazy. She held her son in her arms, bright smiles at his happy little coos. It was tough to let anyone else hold him. Even those she trusted the most. Every fiber of her being screamed when someone asked. But when she handed the baby over to Wanda, she could feel Athan tense by her side. Kaylee held his hand, patting his arm gently. It had to be hard for him too, letting a powerful magic user cast spells and charms on their infant son, but Kaylee trusted no one else in the multiverse to make sure he hadn't been branded. The light show of red hexes that surrounded Damien made her nervous, she only wondered what kept Athan from objecting.
After a thorough examination, Wanda declared nothing nefarious was branded on Damien's soul. A wave of relief washed over Kaylee and she leaned her forehead against Athan's shoulder taking a breath. Happily taking him when Wanda presented the baby to her with a smile and a blessing.
"I want to go home tomorrow." She told Athan, knowing the protest was coming she quickly added "I'll sleep better in my own bed." At least that's what she thought. But the moment they walked through the door a chill ran down her spine. Scorch marks from when lightning shot from her fingers climbed up the walls. Blood stains on the floors. The window still open from where they took her. She grabbed for Athan's hand steadying herself. She thought home would feel safe but all it did was make the ache from her injuries worse.
She shook her head. "I guess no one had the chance to clean up." She stammered lightly, forcing her voice to steady. There was too much damage to go back home. And the tower felt so sterile. She wanted out. Out of the city. Away from the chaos and the memories of what happened.
So when they came back to the Tower, Pepper's suggestion they go to her little stretch of land Kaylee threw her arms around her in a tight hug. "It's not gonna bother you too much if my family comes too?" She asked feeling that much safer with them by her side. But it was a shock when half the Avengers joined them too. Kaylee helped Sophie get everyone situation. Stopping slightly to hiss at the pain that would occasionally shoot through her abdomen. It took her mother, her father, and Sophie's not so gentle prodding to convince her to leave them to their own devices and go to bed.
Kaylee sighed, reaching for Athan's hand and let everyone tell Damien goodnight before the pair made it upstairs. She only made it a few steps before lifting up off the floor, gliding the rest of the way to ease the pain. "I'm fine." She told Athan once they reached the guest bedroom but she rolled her head around her neck to ease the tension she was keeping. "Okay I'm not fine but I will be." She admitted taking the baby out of the crook of his arm.
She floated to the opposite side of the bed, a small briefcase laid flat on the floor marked with the tale tale red paint from her father's Iron Man suit. "Darling?" She began with exasperation. "Can you press the button on the side. Dad made us a crib but I can't bend down."
She moved out of the way, gently rubbing her index finger down the middle of Damien's forehead, down to the bridge of his nose. She hummed softly as she did, watching his eyes struggle to stay open. Even as the crib popped open with a metallic sound, a soft little mattress rolled out, seated perfectly in the middle Kaylee struggled to let go of her son. She looked helpless at Athan, knowing he'd have to be the one to put Damien down and coax her into bed. Otherwise she'd stay up all night pacing the room not letting either of her boys sleep.
With a frown she relented and floated to the bed. A small groan escaped her lungs as she maneuvered to a horizontal position. This injury was really starting to get on her nerves. Moments later she felt Athan's weight on the mattress. His arms finding their way around her. Kaylee rocked her hips back, nestling her back comfortably against him. She took his hands, lightly brushing her fingertips along his, taking in the shape of them.
"I- -" She began, the simplest words in her mind wouldn't come off her lips. She was certain that what she felt about him was real. That after everything they'd been through she had actually fallen in love with him. There was no one else in the world whose arms she'd rather be in as their son rest peacefully in the bassinet next to their bed. But the words got caught in her throat. "I wanted to say thank you." She settled on. "For everything. You've done so much for me over this last year. And I know like ninety percent of it has to do with Damien but I am grateful none the less."
Way to chicken out Kaylee. She chastised herself silently. Carefully she rolled over in his arms to face him. A gentle hand reaching out to cup the contour of his cheek. Maybe she couldn't say it just yet, but she leaned in pressing her lips against his in the lightest feather of a kiss.
"How cute." The voice came, the temperature in the room dropped so fast it made Kaylee's teeth chatter. "Everyone here to protect you. They're doing a bang up job aren't they?"
There in the shadows, just out of the reach of light Kaylee could see the silhouette of her. "But you know they won't be around forever. And Death well," She chuckled "Death is inevitable."
Just as quickly as she appeared she was gone. The whoosh of her flight set chills up Kaylee's spine. Damien lay in his crib wailing. Panicked she flew to his side, picking him up gently eyes widened with terror as she looked to Athan.
And then everyone was in their room. The shouts and the chatter built up so loudly in her ears she couldn't hear herself think. All she could do was hold onto her child, rocking him in a vain effort to calm him.
This room was tainted now too. Even out in the middle of no where, with an army of supers, Death still came into their room. She was mere feet away from him. There was no place safe. Nothing Kaylee could do to protect herself let alone her son. And everyone was just crowding them. She'd backed herself into a corner, taking refuge behind Athan's towering frame. But what could he do? He was in the same boat. They both sat there unable to stop Lady Death's taunts. He knew more than anyone what she wanted with their son. He knew what fate awaited him.
Caged and cornered, Kaylee paced. She squeezed her eyes shut as her mother pressed soft warm hands to her cheeks. The warmth was welcomed but when she opened her eyes there was a pleading. Kaylee needed her space. She nodded silently to Carol, accepted the loving kiss on her cheek and allowed her mother one last goodnight kiss atop Damien's head before the Colonel along with Sophie guided everyone out of the room.
And then the silence was deafening. The only sounds were the creaks in the floor as Kaylee walked back and forth. "Sophie's room is on the other side of the hall." She mumbled "I'm sure she wouldn't mind if we slept there."
Kaylee tried to offer a solution. Knowing there was no possible way she was going to stay in this room now marked by Lady Death. Nor was she going to sleep tonight.
Tears welled in the corner of her eyes. A mix of frustration, anger, and terror pulsed through her veins. How was she supposed to protect him from someone like Lady Death? A thing as old as the universe itself. A concept in corporal form. She tried to breath but the air got caught in her chest. The panic daring to bubble to the surface but she couldn't break. Not now. Not while she was holding Damien. So she kept pacing. Ignoring the stabbing pain in her abdomen with each step.
What are we gonna do? What are we gonna do? She asked over and over in her head. No answers came to her. "I won't let her take him." She shook her head, the anger laced in her voice. "I don't care if I have to hunt down every infinity stone. Open a damn Stargate to every alternate universe and get the help of every Wanda and Strange and stone and otger mes and other yous and other Avengers and maybe throw some X-Men in there for good measure. I will find a way to kill her before she touches my son again." She said determined, but her voice cracked and wavered.

Friction had become the word best to describe what was going on between them. For months the two had danced a delicate tango. Each day pressing closer and closer as they moved through their lives together. Intertwining their daily habits. Kaylee was in no rush to move their relationship through milestones. It was enough to be in the same space as him and know that he would defend her and their son at all costs. It meant even more to her when he'd find her tinkering in the garage and give her bite sized pieces of a meal so she didn't have to wash her hands from the grease and dirt of her work. Or he'd convince her to come to bed and sleep with the promise of his warmth to keep her in bed knowing full well she'd spend weeks on end without rest if he didn't entice her in some way. His presence had a healing effect on her, despite how his entire existence was built around destruction up to this point.
But with one little love spell, their delicate balance snapped apart. A night of magic induced inebriation did not have the outcome that Sophie and Eros were expecting. Instead, the walls Kaylee and Athan had built around themselves became fortresses. Athan made it clear to her, he wasn't going to be pushed into a decision one way or another. And as much as she wanted to confess all the little thoughts in her head, Kaylee knew it wasn't fair to Athan to put any kind of pressure on him.
So her walls went up even stronger than before. She'd turn her sole focus to their son, brushing off any of those little moments from Athan as something more. They weren't. They couldn't be. Then why was it when they passed each other in the kitchen, or brushed up against each other in the hall, her heart started beating a mile a minute.
She'd shove down the feeling. Down to the pit of her stomach until it ached, but she never gave him more than a passing glance. And yet these moments kept happening. Just something as simple as Athan bringing her a bite to eat suddenly became wrought with tension. Taking food from his fingertips was so innocent before but now it felt so charged. Kaylee would tell him to just leave her the plate. He never did though. Like he knew it would go to waste otherwise.
She'd have to shake the thoughts out of her head. Thoughts about him. Thoughts that they could be anything more. He didn't say those words but it was easier in Kay's mind to take that approach. There would be less heartache in the end if she just accepted the inevitable now instead of believing in some ill-conceived notion that they'd be anything more. But dammit did he have to look at her like that? Everyone else, with some notable exceptions, he looked at sharply. Like daggers cutting through to their very heart. But when he looked at her, all she saw was the softness that Lady Death had tried to kill inside of him.
Stop! She'd have to remind herself when she caught her eyes drifting to his lips. Knock it off, she'd chastise herself when he stepped out of the shower with nothing but a towel on as Kay walked in the room and inappropriate thoughts came to mind. Just let it gooooo woman. She'd tell herself when there was a glimmer of a flutter in her stomach at his mere presence.
He told her he couldn't pretend to be the man she wanted him to be, and the notion of ever making him feel that way crushed her heart. But in this moment, after everything they'd been through, his confession threw her for a loop. He about just knocked her off her feet.
Bright blue eyes looked up into his dark ones. She swore she could see the stars in his eyes but maybe that was just the stars in her own vision his words gave her. Did he just tell you he loves you? No idiot, who could? Finger guns! No, don't do that!
Kaylee gulped hard, hoping to shake thoughts away from her mind. Her brows furrowed in light confusion. "This isn't like a Lord of the Rings situation where you follow it up with how you're not technically a man?" She asked with a nervous chuckle. "...not sure you actually get that reference but that's- you know what nevermind scratch that…um" she fiddled with her fingers in front of her. Her eyes fell from his to his lips for a hesitant moment before falling to her hands between them. "Iyuh- I-ugh." She let out a frustrated groan letting her face fall into her hands before burying her into his chest. "Sorry I'm sorry I just…we…and– I cannot believe my brain picked now to go full on fucking blue screen." She said muffled. She pulled back, hands still placed firmly on his chest, her eyes still unable to look up to his gaze again. "Okay sorry I'm back. I'm good. I'm fine. Just um-" She tried to shake the swirl of emotions bubbling up but suddenly found herself sniffling back tears. Kaylee chuckled in disbelief at her own reaction and took a big sigh finally finding the courage to look into his eyes. "Athan I'm here and I'm not going anywhere so, there's no reason to pretend."

Did she push him too hard? Did she give him the impression he had to give her more of himself than he was willing? Kaylee stood dumb founded looking up from his chest to match his dark gaze. Her jaw softened, eyes bright and doe eyed. Her heart fluttered, butterflies hitting her stomach uncomfortably but she gulped down the feeling. An urge to argue, to tell him it wasn't fair of him to make that assumption crossed her mind but Kaylee bit it back by chewing on the inside of her bottom lip.
She must have done something wrong if he was telling her this. She always did something wrong. It didn't matter if she spoke her mind, it didn't matter if she kept her mouth shut. It never mattered what she did. She was always too pushy, too excitable, too much. Or worse, not enough. She thought she'd been muted as of late, her sole focus on protecting their son left her little time for her normal antics. But here he was, thinking she wanted more.
His words cut deeper than she expected. His presence had drawn her back to the land of the living. His perseverance, a lifeboat in the storm that waged in her mind. If Athan could survive thousands of years under Death's tutelage and still try, she could certainly meet him halfway. And she did! She came out of her stupor. She fell in love with their son. She dedicated every breath for that baby. All because of the tiniest example Athan led. Didn't he realize that was enough? Or did she say something - do something - to ask for more?
Her eyes glossed over, a tightness in her chest threatening to overwhelm her. She pressed her heels into the ground and balled her hands into tight little fists until her fingernails dug sharply into her palm wanting desperately not to show him an ounce of the turmoil that boiled beneath the surface. It felt like she had been standing in front of him for ages, silently contemplating his words. She willed every fiber of her being to respond but it revolted, as if it knew she would crumble if she started to speak.
The irony that as a rider of Death she felt a freedom she now longed for. As Pestilence she didn't have these thoughts in her head. She didn't question her place in the universe or whether she was doing the right or wrong thing. She had a purpose and she served that purpose well. No hesitation. No past to give her pause. Only destruction. God why did she long for that feeling again? She had ruined millions of lives. She had left souls in so much agony as they passed this plane to become one of Death's servants. The notion caused bile to rise uncomfortably in her throat. Kaylee cleared her throat and swallowed it down giving Athan a nod in answer to bide more time but her eyes flashed away from his gaze.
Goddamn it. What the fuck is wrong with me? Why can't you fucking talk you stupid fucking bitch. Tell him! Tell him that it's fine! Best case scenario he leaves, worse case scenario he stays and fucks with your head just like everyone else you've ever been with. You know he's no different. Fuck, you know he's worse! Not like you're any goddamn better. Match made in hell right?
Kaylee exhaled slowly. The onslaught of thoughts that raced through her head almost knocked her out. Her head swam, vision turning fuzzy as she trembled. "I…I don't want you to be anything Athan. I've only ever wanted you to make your own choices."
She lifted her gaze back to his, hoping beyond hope that he couldn't see her fragile soul crack in her eyes. "I'm sorry-" she faltered. Would it be too much to ask him what she had done? Would it be wrong to ask for some direction? Or some sign that it was okay and he just needed space and reassurance? "Just um…maybe tell me what you need? ...If you want?"
