'Glamping' to debut in Penang
GEORGE TOWN, July 9:
Imagine going camping in the jungle sans the tent, camping gear, all the cooking and then cleaning up; just bring yourself and enjoy camping in the tapestry of the jungle with a little bit of adventure and luxury in between.
Penang will see another attraction to the island known as “glamping”, an acronym for “glamorous camping”, which is the first of its kind concept to be introduced in the country.
Set to be built around the jungle in Teluk Bahang known as Boulder Valley in an eco-friendly way without damaging the environment and ecological system there, the whole project will take two years to complete.
Penangites and tourists can now look forward to camping in the most comfortable and carefree ways possible while basking outdoors surrounded by nature, with a little adventure thrown in albeit in a stylish way.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng announced this at a press conference in Komtar, saying that countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia and Thailand already had the concept and Penang will be the first state in the country to introduce glamping in the country.
Lim said the project would bring positive economic impact to the state by bringing in tourists to the island and providing job opportunities to the locals through direct employment at the resort.
“This is an up-and-coming trend for travellers who want to experience the great outdoors, nature and a little adventure during their holiday without sacrificing comfort and safety.
“Penang is proud to introduce this new concept to the country,” he told a press conference in Komtar today.
The project, to be undertaken by Treasure Orchard Sdn Bhd, will sit on a 22-acre piece of land that will be built around three huge boulders; hence the name Boulder Valley Glamping Resort.
Project executive director Lee Woon Poo assured that the project would employ an environment sensitive design approach, combining unique experiences for guests.
“Our main objective is to create an authentic eco-resort that maintains the environmental characteristic of the site, including the biological and geological factors of the place.
“Elevated pathways, tented camps with structures on stilts, minimal disturbances to the natural habitat and vegetation will be employed.
“Guests can enjoy unique experiences and basic amenities, a 1-km buggy truck, tree top restaurants, 100m long suspended bridge, bid-watching decks and tailored services,” she said.
