Stage 1 Complete, Onward to Stage 2!

I did it! I finished my course... thing! I learned some stuff, and also some things! I feel no farther along in my learning of Japanese! Wait, what? Yeah... I don't know. I suppose I feel farther along, and practice is great. I still have no idea how to actually hold a conversation, which was more or less the *point* in my mind. Thank the gods for Google Translate XD

Anywho, I'm at Stage 2 of my explorations - a WorkAway in a house that needs a significant amount of renovation. It has... a *lot* of odd problems, especially considering that it's not that old (1992!). Just... weird design choices made at the time of construction, and some very questionable concepts implemented that now have to be undone.

The shinkansen was fast. Like, plane-on-the-ground kind of fast. Sadly, I did not have a window seat, so not many pics worthy of posting from that trip. A surprising amount of it was in tunnels, as well. I think the neatest site was coming out of a tunnel to see a traditional-looking village nestled in a valley between mountains. It was really cool.

And now I'm here. Behold, a new desk. A new home-away-from-home, for a while.

PS: In the process of writing this, my laptop decided that it'd had enough of this life. Basically, just decided to shut off while I was still on the first paragraph. Doesn't seem to be the battery, and I've cleaned it out thoroughly and renewed the thermal paste. So... yeah. Kind of at a loss on it, hoping it's not RAM. Getting parts here is... interesting. Currently, borrowing my WorkAway hosts' Lenovo ThinkPad summat or other. Works for now, but not a permanent solution. I'm gonna tear the old Acer apart again and make sure the thermal paste spread properly, but if that doesn't do it... then what? If you have thoughts, please advise. Cheeribees!

ウクライナ避難民の方へ

ロシア軍の狂気的なウクライナ侵攻を受け、日本の岸田首相はウクライナ避難民受け入れを表明し、それに呼応するかのように日本のいくつかの企業や自治体が積極的な受け入れに手を上げた。一方、当地がある自治体は多くの外国人が訪れ平和都市宣言もしている観光都市であるので、私の立場でも行政に協調して出来ることはあるのではないかと、ウクライナ避難民受け入れの方針について問い合わせたのだが、10日経って来た回答は「今後情報収集をしつつ、できる支援がないか検討していく」という悠長なものだった。言っていることは間違っていないが、いかんせん迅速な対応にこそ意味がある事案なので、地元自治体に期待するのは止めてやれることを自分でやることにした。

具体的には、以前より当地のホームステイ受入窓口としている「Workaway」で、ウクライナ避難民に対しては通常より受入条件を大幅に緩和させて対応することにする。滞在期間は最短数日から最長数ヶ月まで、人数は大人2人+小人2人程度までは何とかなりそう（先着1家族のみ）。滞在費用は食費を含め無料だが、農作業を含めた家事を半日手伝ってもらうのは通常通り。詳しいことは応相談。私の出来ることはきわめて些細であるが必要とする人の一助になるなら幸いだ。

Перед обличчям цієї української війни я готовий значно пом’якшити умови і прийняти вас. Період від кількох днів до кількох місяців, максимальна кількість людей 2 дорослих + 2 дітей (тільки 1 сім’я). Також доступний високошвидкісний Інтернет. Вартість проживання безкоштовна, але, як зазвичай, вам знадобиться допомога з домашніми справами, в тому числі по господарству. Якщо ви цього хочете, подайте запит на перебування в My Place на сайті Workaway. Реєстрація на Workaway зазвичай платна, але, схоже, наразі вона безкоштовна для біженців з України.

Dear Ukrainian refugees: I have registered as a host on Workaway, one of the work exchange platforms, and many people from home and abroad have homestayed at my place. During this unreasonable Ukrainian war, I have greatly relaxed the conditions and are ready to accept you. Duration few days to few months, maximum 2 adults + 2 children (1 family only). High-speed internet is also available. Living expenses are free, including food, but you will need to help with household chores for half a day as usual. If you wish, please submit a stay request to my place from the Workaway website. Workaway registration is usually charged, but refugees from Ukraine now seem to be free.

It must admit that Covid lockdowns has been good for remote workers and nomads, but not so much for volunteers. A lot of people has lost jobs, job offers, livelihoods and houses; where traveling and immigration plans was in place these dreams and expectations seem to have crashed to the ground in a thousand of rands of wasted money. Where job offers abroad may still be sort of abroad, no one seems sure if and when things will ever go back to normal normalcy. Viruses change shape, they never go away. The slow return to a slight case if normality that the demand for freelance work is getting less as employees return to their places if work. Keep searching... A lot of people have it figured out, and thy are still traveling abroad and earning. I wish we have it figured out... still trying. That means having to find some side-hustles between volunteers jobs until we someday do.
