T E M A Z C A L “Blew open my mind, now it’s an empty room.” Something I’ve wanted to do since Monsters of Folk came out with a song of the same name and it had me googling this Ancient Mexican sweat lodge medicine like crazy. For some reason I felt so called to it - I asked everyone I knew from Mexico about it for years. And today was the day. NOT easy but I am so glad I did it - for someone who usually feels claustrophobic- it was 100% mind over matter. What an incredible experience for each of us who walked in as strangers but now share a special bond. For those of you who know me know I’m not a crier but you can bet this old as time ceremony made me ugly sob - not because of the heat or the steam but because of the clarity I received at the third door of the practice (the one where you go inside and confront your darkness -yeesh!). I go into most things with high expectations and tend to leave somewhat disappointed but this, this was some real shit. Guatemala Trip Antigua to Chajul

We've had an exciting & exhausting past few days! Explored the town of Antigua since there was a political protest blocking the road to Chajul. We did eventually arrive in Chajul after a 5+ hour van ride. Thanks to Lindsay R. and Laura (LHI Board Members) who have been translating for us as we travel with them. Our first day in Chajul was very busy. We met all of the LHI staff and sat in on their monthly meeting, filmed footage of students using the computer lab, had lunch at Cecelia's family's home (the Musens sponsor her), ate boxbol (traditional Ixil dish of squash leaves stuffed with cornmeal and topped with ground sauce of nuts, pepitas, and a spicy tomato sauce), had a meeting about the video, filmed a workshop for women in the Artisan Program and then checked out a new local cafe. That night after dinner, we were invited to a Temezcal traditional sauna - where we got warm and bathed!
