Little illustration for my REPLACED fan fic "Arms Held Out." Which is basically 5k words of "these two need to hug sooo bad."

I blasted this piece out in 2 days with a work time of 11 hours and 29 minutes, and I have no idea how that happened. I think a recent medication change either working very well or very badly. Well in terms of being able to stay awake and work through the day and not get bogged down with perfectionism, badly in terms of "my executive dysfunction / hyperfixation is so ass that I couldn't switch tasks away from drawing to the detriment of other things I needed to do," lol. But yeah, 2 full characters and a background in 11.5 hours is unheard of for me.

Working across only 4 work sessions does mean I didn't have many checkpoints to "reset" my eyes though, so there are errors I'm noticing the next morning... ;>w> Nothing major, at least.

I had to keep checking the proportions because Reach's legs looked too long, but no, it's correct. They and Tempest are both just really lanky, lol.

I'm pretty proud of this one! I feel like I got the physicality of the hug down, and Tempest's expression is really fun. Love Tempest. Absolute golden retriever of a character.

I'm thinkin' 'bout Tempest from the game REPLACED again because man... what an interesting character when you put him under a microscope.

On the surface, he comes across dumb of ass because he's so SUICIDALLY RECKLESS, IMPULSIVE, AND HOT-HEADED. Uses himself as bait for snipers regularly, runs his mouth and gets punched for it, constantly comes up with bullshit nothing-burger ""plans""...

But if you pay attention, this dude is smart and extremely capable! Knows all about disassembling and rebuilding things, modded his car into an absolute monster, keeps his living spaces neat & tidy, keeps a detailed map to plan & organize patrol routes, is an adept fighter, adept leader by the sounds of it, knows enough science about accumulators and particles to know how to use an air conditioning unit to fucking double-jump, etc etc etc! I love me a good "don't judge a book by its cover" character!

Speaking of, this all draws a fun parallel with his character foil; Reach. On top of Reach being the king of "don't judge a book by its cover" characters, there's a subversion of character archetypes, too. You see an advanced AI and you'd think, "Oh, it must be really smart." And it (probably?) is, but its areas of knowledge and experience are so painfully narrow that you throw it onto the streets and it's suddenly a naive, gullible, clueless doofus. Compare that to the 21 year old punk and his myriad of incredibly practical special interests & skills who's independent and pretty successful.

AI who thinks too much but knows so little VS kid who knows so much but doesn't think things through enough... I love character foil duos so much, dude.
