Alive.

The original Tempo.exe program was designed to be an evolving idle pet simulator, like a Tamagotchi for your computer. It worked a little too well... especially the network sharing features!! ⠀ Billions of individual specimens exploded across nearby unsuspecting machines, causing severe lag and crashes and random outages.

Overzealous Tempo strains were quickly identified as killware, targeted by antiviruses, and generally annihilated, leaving only the tiniest and most elusive packets behind. Even now, they have to be careful: the most popular brands are all inoculated to signs of Tempo.

Anyway, according to their original programming, Tempo earn Nodes by living longer.

You can usually recognize infant Tempo by a certain length and height, and differentiate juveniles from adults by complexity (displacement from the basic template (HeadBodyTail, TailTip, Antennae[2, 0], Limbs[4, 0])), though it isn't a perfect identification.

Nowadays, some Tempo have become "makers|..''/-/,=•-|[,-." These individuals occasionally produce children with a few Nodes pre-unlocked.
