You sat on your balcony that overlooked the ocean. The waves crashed against the rocks in front of you. It was abnormally dark outside, and the night was eerily silent. You heard nothing but the waves crashing, not even any wind. You couldn’t see anything but silhouettes in the small amount of moonlight, silhouettes of houses, trees, but no humans. It was calming but at the same time, it felt like the night was afraid. Afraid that if it made too much noise something would happen. Much like the night, you were silent aside from the air slowly filling then leaving your lungs. This was a night that people would warn you to stay inside and warn you that something dangerous lurks in the dark. The people in your village where you lived told stories of the things they had seen and they told them to their children as a warning, but you saw it as nothing more than a way to scare kids.
You closed your eyes and relaxed, letting the waves start to lull you to sleep. Right when sleep started to overcome you, you heard a voice quietly singing. You opened your eyes and could make out a silhouette among the rocks. It sounded like a man. His voice got louder as he sang, and it was haunting. The silence that once filled the night was now filled with this man’s beautiful, eerie, and haunting voice. It was like a drug, so hypnotizing like it could put you under a trance. You stood from your chair and walked to the edge of the balcony, just wanting to get closer. The chair moved against your balcony when you got up. The man quickly turned and stopped singing, and you felt dizzy. He stepped towards you and started singing again, but louder this time. You fell back into the trance of his voice, swaying slowly with his voice, your eyes closed and you just let the voice pull you in.
It was like you had lost control of your body, your movements, and your mind was filled with beautiful visions. You had to get closer, you pushed yourself up onto the balcony ledge, and stood up. You finally felt a breeze, and it pushed you back like it was trying to lull you back from the edge, lull you away from the soothing voice. Nothing could stop you though, you needed more. You raised a foot to step off when another gust of wind hit you. You felt a hand on your face and opened your eyes to stare into beautiful glowing blue ones. It was like he held the oceans in his eyes. His face was enchanting, the most beautiful man you had ever seen. He was still singing, and you leaned into his touch, needing more, craving more. At that moment you couldn’t even question how he got up to your balcony. You were just glad he was close so you could hear his haunting voice closer.
“Come with me, darling.”
He offered you his hand and you took it, letting him pull you into his arms. He started to sing again, and when you wrapped an arm around his neck you felt his soft wings.
“Are you an angel?”
He eyed you as he sang then smiled, “Far from it.”
Such a beautiful smile.
Maybe the stories the people spoke of were true, but at that moment all you cared about was the man’s voice.
You only cared about being there, as your mind filled with false images of life. It was becoming overwhelming like you were going to lose your mind. But his touch put you at ease. You closed your eyes and laid your head against the man’s shoulder.
“What is your name angelic singer?”
“Ten.”
He seemed to not want to talk, instead wanting to only sing. Which you didn’t mind, his voice was what pulled you in. You were under his spell and didn’t have a care about what happened to you, only caring that you could hear the voice for longer.
What you didn’t know is that Ten was out on a hunt that night. The times of wrecking ships had ended and sirens had to change their methods of hunting. Many people of that village had learned not to go out, to not risk it, after so many people went missing, but you hadn’t learned. Your fate had been sealed on that night when you ignored the many warnings you had been told throughout your life. You succumbed to the siren’s song, like so many before you.
