By the 5th ring, he picks up. By the 5th ring...he always picks up.
"Sigh..."
The only thing that reaches your ears. A sigh. A tired sigh.
Silence fills the line on both your end and his, for a good while. So quiet you start to think perhaps he fell back asleep.
"3am..a new record for you." Jaehyun speaks up with slight irritation hiding behind his tired words.
"I'm s-"
"Sorry. I know." He cuts you off.
Silence. Once again.
"Were you sleeping well..?" You ask, defeated.
Another sigh falls off his lips, and rustling on his end ensues. Probably him getting back comfortable.
"I was, yes. I was sleeping very well actually."
Silence..
"Were you?" He asks.
You light up a bit at his attempt to further your late conversation.
"Yes. Well, I dreamt of us again actually..that time you took me to the amusement park!"
"Which time?" Jaehyun asks, curiosity peaking.
"The third time! When I ran into-"
"That little boy? And you made him drop his ice cream and he started crying?"
"Haha yes! And his mom laughed and said she was just telling him to watch where he was going or else he'd drop his ice cream!"
Jaehyun chuckles, wholeheartedly as the scene resurfaces. You both sit there, stuck in bliss, talking over and over about different times you've had with one another. You blaming him for getting a ticket for stopping traffic, him defending saying he just had to run out and pet the dog. And various other amazing times you've both had.
Until..
A smooth voice laces through the phone, and stings through your ears, stilling all happy memories.
"Is it her again?" The voice asks him.
Silence.
You assume he nods as the voice sighs and speaks to you directly.
"It's a new time for you to call. I was starting to wonder if you stopped."
"..sorry for calling so late.." Her name rolls painfully off your lips like bleach to a wound.
Her voice, forcing bad memories back into your head. The arguing, the broken objects, the whispered words of "I want a divorce."
That's right, the truth. The truth you wanted so desperately to forget. He divorced you. Your love, not strong enough to keep him. And a few years later, he remarries.
"I'm sorry.." She whispers to you, as she does almost every night.
The fact that she pities you...pities you for still being in love with someone who moved on. That hurts. But what hurts worse, is that you can call her husband every single night and talk for hours and she doesn't mind.
Why?
Because, she knows, he will never love you again. That's...that's what hurts the most.
"I..have to be up early for work tomorrow.."
His voice..
You nod, aware that he can't see, silently as tears stream down your now swollen cheeks.
"Have a good night...okay?"
Silence.
"Make sure to turn the heater off now. You know how you forget and it gets unbearably hot in the middle of the night.."
Silence.
He remembers..
"Make sure all your doors are locked."
Silence.
"And don't cover your face with the blanket..you know you can't breathe.."
Silence. Every night he used to pull the covers off your face, knowing full well you couldn't breathe.
He remembers..
"I'll talk to you tomorrow.." He says with pity now lacing his voice.
Silence.
You can't answer, can't let him know you're broken. Even though, He already knows. For the past 3 years you've done this, and he knows.
With that, he hangs up.
You know you'll call him tomorrow night. You always do. And with that thought, you're left sitting in silence. Sitting with the knowledge, that you'll always call but he's
Never,
Coming
Back.
