2018 AFC South Team Analysis and Projections
After winning the division two years in a row with a 9-7 record, the Texans suffered an injury-plagued season resulting in a disappointing 4-12 finish. The Jaguars proceeded to claim the division with a 10-6 record battling to the very end against a Titans squad which finished 9-7 for the second year in a row while the Colts looked lost without Andrew Luck under center stumbling to a 4-12 record.
In 2018 the AFC South looks to be competitive from top to bottom. The Jaguars return almost everyone from a team which advanced to the AFC title game. As for the Titans, they will seek to repeat the success from last year and improve upon it under first-year head coach Mike Vrabel. Both the Texans and Colts success relies on quarterbacks coming off injuries – Watson’s torn ACL and Lucks shoulder. If both are healthy, each team has as good of a chance as any in the division to win it.
Jacksonville Jaguars

Key Additions
Offense
Andrew Norwell (OG)(free agent - Panthers) – Norwell was the crown jewel of the Jaguars free agent class coming off a first-team All-Pro season. Norwell was connected to the Giants prior to the start of free agency, but the Jaguars came out of nowhere to sign him showing they will continue with the smashmouth offensive style which propelled them to the AFC title game.
Austin Sefarian-Jenkins (TE)(free agent - Jets) - Sefarian-Jenkins was a second-round pick coming out of the University Of Washington. Expectations were high, but he failed to live up to them struggling to stay on the field for only 16 games in his first two seasons and later having personal struggles with alcohol. Sefarian-Jenkins seems to have overcome these struggles to have a bounce-back season with the Jets. His 50 catches, 357 yards, and 3 touchdowns resulted in a 2 year deal with the Jaguars. Jenkins is not the blocker that Mercedes Lewis was, but he should be an improvement in the pass-catching department on an offense which was deprived of it a year ago. I would expect increased production from Sefarian-Jenkins in the Jaguars offense as he should be a safety valve for quarterback Blake Bortles. Overall Sefarian-Jenkins was a quality signing for an offense in need of playmaking ability from the tight-end position.
Defense
D.J Hayden (CB)(free agent - Lions) – When Aaron Colvin signed with the Texans, it left a void on one of the leagues best defenses at the nickel cornerback position. The Jaguars answered by signing D.J Hayden to a 3-year deal. Hayden was drafted by the Raiders in the 1st round in 2013. After 4 years with the Raiders Hayden signed with the Lions last offseason becoming the team's nickel corner. Hayden had an up and down season with the Lions. Expecting a Pro Bowl season from Hayden would be a mistake but expecting improvement by being surrounded by 2 All Pro’s in Bouye and Ramsey would be reasonable. Hayden is unlikely to be as good as Colvin was last year but he should be able to fill the nickel corner role adequately.

Offense
Allen Robinson (WR)(Signed with Bears) – Robinson missed all but the first game of last season with a torn ACL. Of course, it hurts anytime you lose a receiver of Robinson’s caliber, but the Jaguars still made the AFC championship game and also scored 45 points on the Steelers in the playoffs. Will it hurt not having Robinson? Sure, but the Jaguars change in offensive philosophy may have led to them allowing Robinson to walk so easily.
Defense
Aaron Colvin (CB)(Signed with Texans) – Colvin was an excellent slot cornerback for the Jaguars last season and was an underrated part of one of the top defenses in the league. The Jag’s will seek to replace Colvin with D.J Hayden, and that should be a downgrade but overall shouldn’t impact the defense significantly.
Team Analysis
The Jaguars finally burst onto the scene last year getting all the way to the AFC Championship game on the backs of a ground and pound offense (to minimize possible turnovers by Blake Bortles) and a loaded defense with the most swagger in the NFL. The Jaguars look poised to repeat their success from last year after a solid free agency period and draft. The Jaguars will be the favorite to win the division (as they should be) and I would expect them to do just that in 2018.
Houston Texans
2018-19 Projected Finish: 2nd

Offense
Zach Fulton (OG/C)(free agent - Chiefs ) – Fulton played in 31 of the possible 32 games the last two seasons and started 24 of them. Fulton showed an average to slightly above average ability to play both guard and center for the Chiefs. With Deshaun Watson coming off a torn ACL, the Texans made it a priority to upgrade the offensive line, and with Zach Fulton, the team got a player who, barring injury, should start at left guard
Senio Kelmete (OG)(free agent - Saints) - Kelmete has played in 31 games the last 2 years starting 17 of them. Kelmete provides a steady presence with the possibility to start at guard along with free agent addition Zach Fulton. Though not a PFF darling, ask any Saints fan and his play is better than his PFF rating would indicate. Kelmete is another welcome addition to an offensive line that needed improvement.
Defense
Aaron Colvin (CB)(free agent- Jaguars) – The Texans ranked 24th in passing yards allowed per game defensively after ranking 1st in 2016. Colvin was a big part of Jacksonville’s defensive success last season manning the nickel corner role and playing a damn well at it. Seeing where Colvin will play in the defense, whether it be as a nickel or outside corner, will be interesting to see if he can sustain his success. If the Texans are to improve from last season’s defensive shortcoming, Colvin should play a pivotal role in it.
Tyrann Mathieu (S)(free agent – Cardinals) The Honey Badger becoming available was a bit shocking as he had just led the NFL in defensive snaps played last year. Nonetheless, the Cardinals parted ways with Mathieu. The Cardinals loss is the Texans gain. Mathieu figures to start at safety for the Texans. The additions of Colvin and Mathieu should contribute to the Texans defensive turnaround.
Key Losses
Offense
C.J Fiedorowicz (TE)(Cut by the team) – Fiedorowicz was released by the team after suffering multiple concussions last season and throughout his career. He decided that for his wellbeing, he should stop playing football, and good for him on making that decision. On the football side, his loss means the Texans are that much thinner at the Tight End position heading into next season.
Defense
Brian Cushing (LB)(Cut by the team) – Cushing had been a stalwart of the Texans defense for years, but after last season’s 10 game suspension for PED’s and declining play, the Texans felt that Cushing didn’t warrant the cap hit for next season. With the emergence of rookies Dylan Cole and Zach Cunningham, it seems that Cushing was deemed even more expendable. The Defense should not skip a beat next season without Cushing.
Team Analysis
The defense for the Texans is no Joke. The additions of Colvin, Mathieu and third round safety Justin Reid, as well as the return of key players from injuries, should lead the unit to again being one of the NFL’s best. On the offensive side of the ball, the Texans offensive line and the health of Deshaun Watson will be keys to the Texans’ offensive success. The Texans have the ability to win this division, but I find it more likely that they will battle with the Titans for 2nd or 3rd and a wild card spot.
Tennessee Titans

Dion Lewis (RB)(free agent - Patriots) – Out is DeMarco Murray in is Dion Lewis. The Titans signed Lewis on a 4 year deal worth around $20 million. Lewis is coming off a season in which he averaged 5.0 yards a carry and 6.7 yards a reception.
Defense
Malcolm Butler (CB)(free agent - Patriots) – The Titans decided to go back to Foxborough to help their 25th ranked passing defense. After getting Logan Ryan last year, the Titans handed Malcolm Butler a five-year deal. Butler, of course, ended last season on a low note after being benched during the super bowl – an instance which still has not been explained. Butler is coming off an up and down 2017 after being an all-pro in 2016. The Titans are hoping they get the all-pro version to help their 25th ranked defense. Butler should have a bounce-back season under new head coach Mike Vrabel and hopefully, shadow opposing teams No. 1 week in and week out.
Key Losses
Offense
DeMarco Murray (RB)(Remains Unsigned) – Murray being cut by the Titans was seen coming for a while after a season in which his production was down. It made both financial sense and long-term sense to cut Murray and move on to Derrick Henry who had asserted himself as the best running back on the roster. The Titans then turned to New England to find a complementary back to Henry with Dion Lewis who played very well last season.
Defense
Avery Williamson (LB)(Signed with Jets) – Williamson is a really solid run-stopping linebacker who definitely has his lapses in pass coverage. With the team having Jayon Brown in the wings whose specialty is pass coverage and drafting Raashan Evans in the first round, the team has more than adequate options to replace Williamson. Overall the loss of Williamson is not one of significance for this defense going forward.
Team Analysis
The Titans could easily win this division next season, but the competition will be fierce between a Jaguars team and a Texans team returning star quarterback Deshaun Watson for a full season. I expect the Titans will finish 2nd or 3rd in the division next season with the Jag’s winning it.
Indianapolis Colts
2018-19 Projected Finish: 4th
2017-18 Finish: 3rd

Offense
Quenton Nelson (OG)(draft, 1st round 6th pick) – The Colts took the best offensive linemen in the draft and maybe the best guard prospect in the last decade in Nelson. With Nelson, Kelly, Castonzo and 2nd round pick Offensive Guard Braden Smith, the Colts offensive line should be a solid unit. Nelson should immediately assert himself as one of the best guards in the NFL in his rookie season and hopefully, for the Colts, lock down his spot along the line for the next decade.
Eric Ebron (TE)(free agent - Lions) - Ebron never quite lived up to his lofty draft status, but he was a consistent producer following his rookie season recording 47 or more receptions each of the last 3 years. The Lions cut Ebron because he wasn’t worth his contract. The 2-year deal worth $13 million the Colts signed him to should see him play up to the value of the new contract. Expecting Ebron to produce around 50 receptions and 600 yards this coming season isn't a stretch by any means.
Defense
Darius Leonard (draft, 2nd round 4th pick) – The Colts made relatively few moves pertaining to additions on the defensive side of the ball but one piece added was linebacker Darius Leonard of South Carolina State. Leonard is an explosive playmaker who should be able to help a struggling defense. Leonard’s athleticism should allow him to help cover tight ends in the NFL as well as be a significant asset in his ability to stop the run.
Key Losses
Offense
Frank Gore (RB)(Signed with Dolphins) – Frank Gore has been the Colts bell-cow back for the last 3 seasons and handled the ball 784 times. He was also available week in and week out starting all 48 games the last 3 seasons for the team. The biggest concern with losing Gore is whether the Colts’ backs will be as dependable as the future hall of famer was for the team.
Defense
Barkevious Mingo (LB)(Signed with Seahawks) – Mingo had a solid season last year for the Colts defense. On a defense as bad as the Colts, a loss of any player as solid as Mingo is a loss. Mingo was not deemed a fit by Colts management as the team is switching schemes for the upcoming season. Overall the Colts defense will struggle again this season, but Mingo’s impact would have been minimal for the unit.
Team Analysis
Andrew Luck’s shoulder is what this season for the Colts depends on. If he is unable to go again, the Colts will turn to Jacoby Brisett who is a good fill in but not close to the talent of Andrew Luck. The defense will once again struggle. Overall the Colts seem the most likely to finish last in the AFC South division.

2018 NFL Playoffs: Wild Card Weekend Ramifications
The NFL Playoffs are here and is already living up to the postseason hype with surprising upsets in the Wild Card Round – Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Buffalo Bills with the lowest combined points in playoff history and the Saints just nearly edged the Panthers in a back-and-forth shootout at home.
The First Round started off with one of the biggest surprises this postseason when the Tennessee Titans upset the Kansas by just one point at Arrowhead Stadium. Mariota and company scored 19 unanswered points in the second half to knock off the Chiefs in a tough road playoff game, shattering Alex Smith/Andy Reid’s potential with Kansas City.
Alex Smith is now 1-4, even with weapons like Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill. This talented Chiefs roster has failed to live up to expectations the past several seasons, losing five playoff games in a row, now dropping to a 2-6 record all-time in Arrowhead Stadium.
The expression and overall feeling from the postgame conference with Head Coach Andy Reid, basically had said it all for the state of the Chiefs. It looks like there will be whole sale changes next season, especially with winding-down contracts from the quarterback and head coach.
Will Alex Smith or Andy Reid return next season with the Chiefs?
The Chiefs were the catalyst as a tough road block in the AFC, now that the Patriots will be facing the Titans instead, the pathway to the Super Bowl is now an easier one for the defending champs. While Tennessee looked impressive in it’s first playoff win in years, they don’t necessarily stack up like their opponent to a team like the Patriots.
Patriots will win easily at home this Saturday, muting all the outside noise and negativity from the media. Unless Mariota throws for over 400 yards and 3 touchdowns, Titans don’t have much of a chance against an angry Patriots team.
Being a huge fan for underdogs, I couldn’t be happier for the Jacksonville Jaguars this season. The past few years I had always rooted for the Jaguars to do well, because they have had one of the longest droughts in the NFL for any success whatsoever.
A team that used to have the worst winning percentage in the league for the past decade (besides the Browns), is now moving on to the next round of the playoffs. I love it.
Excited as I am for the Jaguars, I don’t see them defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers again, especially in a playoff game atmosphere on the road. I hope I am wrong though, remember anything can happen on any given Sunday in the NFL.

The Saints have to be the most dangerous team in the NFC, defeating a tough Carolina team and Brees’ spectacular play make them scary opponent in the playoffs. If the Ingrid-Kamara running back tandem show up against the Falcons, Brees will take his team to the Super Bowl.
