Medvedev has lost his first round match adding to number of seeds exiting earlier then expected. Medvedev lost a five setter to Herbert the Frenchmen who would have felt the home court advantage. This result could have something to do with how much tennis Medvedev has been playing over the clay court period, his body may be feeling the many matches he has been a part of. His form looked best earlier in the clay season when he went deep in Barcelona and mad his first clay court atp final.

Shapovalov fails to make an impression after losing in straight sets to Struff. This result was not completely unpredictable as Struff is a quality opponent and would give most players a good run for their money. I would not have expected this result to be achieved in straight sets though, as Shapovalov is showing some good promise for a young player. I will be keeping my eye on Struff as the tournament progresses as he has the ability to give anyone a good challenger. If he makes it through the next round he is likely to come up against Coric and that would be a very interesting match to witness.
