The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is sending refunds of nearly $3.9 million to consumers who bought Quell, a wearable nerve stimulation device touted as a drug-free treatment for chronic pain. The refunds are part of a settlement the FTC reached in March with NeuroMetrix – the maker of Quell – over deceptive advertising.
An FTC complaint alleges that NeuroMetrix and CEO Shai Gozani advertised Quell as an effective treatment for fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, sciatica, shingles and other chronic pain conditions without reliable scientific evidence to back it up.
Two clinical studies cited in Quell advertisements had “substantial flaws,” according to the FTC, while a third study was based on a marketing survey conducted by the company to “generate potential advertising claims” about the device. The FTC also objected to claims that Quell was “clinically proven” and “FDA cleared” for chronic pain relief.
“Defendants engaged in their unlawful acts and practices repeatedly over a period of more than four years, continued their unlawful acts or practices despite knowledge of complaints that advertising claims for Quell were not substantiated and went beyond claims the FDA allowed for similar devices, and continued such deceptive advertising unabated until FTC staff notified them it would recommend law enforcement action,” the FTC complaint alleged.
Neurometrix settled the case – without admitting or denying the allegations – for $4 million. The company also agreed to stop claiming that Quell provides “widespread relief” for chronic or severe pain beyond the knee area where the device is worn. (Read more at link)
I won a quell for free but I only bought a few electrodes before I ceased using it. Even with the free device the electrodes were too expensive for something that only took my pain down a half a point, a point at best. I intended to write a review but I never got around to it, I guess this article speaks more than any review I can provide. And they’re right, tens devices are more effective On the area they work on. I prefer my cheap Walgreens one that sat on my back to this.
I received a free Quell product from a giveaway and I want to share with you my first impressions. Importantly I had assumed based on how it looked that there were no adhesive electrodes, but there are. So anyone with an adhesive allergy, unfortunately they still have that aspect of being a TENS device.
I had hope the band itself was somehow conductive but it just holds the device and hides/supposes the electrodes. For the most part it’s just a TENS device, and you will have to continue buying electrodes at a price I’m not sure of. At least they come with two that last two weeks and the instructions says it can take a month to feel the effects, so enough time to decide if I’ll purchase more and keep using this device.
I think what could potentially set this apart is its approach to using the technology. When paired with the smartphone app you can record pain levels and have a little more control over the therapy than just pressing a button and hoping you have the right setting, which it also allows you to do if you don’t have access to the app. But I think the app may be vital to taking advantage of the new way they intend to use it. When I had a TENS device before I put it on my back and used it to reduce pain there. This device only goes on your leg for 3 hour long therapy sessions with 1 hour breaks in between. The goal is reduce over all pain not just localized pain.
In the past TENS devices have helped with localized pain for a period of time. This device boasts that by using targeted computer controlled therapy it can achieve all over lowering of pain levels. I’m hopeful but skeptical at the same time.
As far as the device itself goes, it’s a sleek design, not unweildly, and has a rechargeable battery. Battery replacement on my last device before it broke was annoying. Also you can schedule the therapy while you sleep.
So these are my initial impressions of the Quell device. I will post another review in a month, and with luck I sincerely hope it will be a positive review with lessened pain over all.
