The Tentacle Knight- A tentacle monster from a dungeon who decides to don a suit of armor and go find out what the surface world is like. He is pretty nervous about stuff up here and is honestly a pretty poor actor.
Hi, just wanted to say that I love your art and characters. I remember that a while ago you made a post talking about some dnd races that you've made/thought of (think it was the post about wraithlings- which are very cool). I've looked around on your blog and it seems that you've only talked about the wraithlings. Would you be willing to give us some info/art of the other original races you've made?
I have made a few here and there-mainly based around things of my personal amusement, so let’s talk about a few of them for the kids who are new here
Wraithlings-If you wanna a creature who is built like a paladin tank with no relgious obligations or sense of gender constructs; Wraithlings are what you seek. Built like a shit brick house, Wraithlings are the embodiment of raw physical power and also emotional instability (which comes from unfortunately them selectively breeding themselves to produce bigger and angrier offspring) Although they are feared as brutes who can and will eat bears-being able to do delicate arts such as sew, paint and even play music has great standing in their community. They are noted well for a strong lack a sexual dimorphism in their race (that means there’s no difference between any of the male identifying or female identifying ones)
ShadowGlop- Or at least that’s was their native tongue roughly translates into thru Common. They’re essentially what the civilization form of a hagfish would be had they been the ones to grow legs. They hail from swamp like villages that are sequestered and kept away form civilization, choosing to make sure their traditions and values remain unchanged. If you like ‘Swamp witches’ Or ‘Bog Wizards ‘as a title, ShadowGlops are your folk. They are noted for having title like names denoting what they do best in life-many being named things like Lilly Finder, King Fisher, Gator Slitter. Their bodies change depending on the moisture in the air-the more moisture, they become slime like, less moisture, their form is more gasious and much like an air elemental. They are immensely sensitive to light and cover themselves in layers and layers of clothing to protect their bodies. Although they make excellent rogues and piss poor combat specalists-there are a few that excel in artificing and magic work. Similar to Wraithlings-they lack natural sexual dimorphism-but will often choose one or the other when they must mingle among other creatures that INSIST on gender being a thing.
(Wraithlings: What is a gender? ShadowGlops: A fake construct made to sell things don’t worry about. It.)
Tenta-Folk-One of the newer races I’ve come up with-Tentafolk are essentially what happens when you leave a tentacle monster be and allow it to grow up into a fully realized form. Immensely intellgent and curious, they often get a bad rap by adventures who claim to be ‘assaulted’ by them in their juvenile stage. In truth, a Tentafolk in this stage of life sees thru their tentacles and was simply examining. Tenta Folk often cram themselves into ‘shells’ like knight armor or braid their tentacles over each other to create a humanoid shape to mingle among the civilized people. They’re very versatile people and can be anything from rogues, magicians, scholars and bards.
Anndd that’s alI can think of now that I have right off the top of my head.
I couldn’t stand it-Time for Tentacle Knight
If the tencacle monsters were established as their own "pc" race what do you think would be their racial traits? And their relationship with other races?
If they were a PC race, they’d probably just be called Tentas or ‘Tenta-Folk’ for since Tentacle Monster is such a mouthful sometimes.
Fun Racial Traits-
Slimey Texture-Anyone who grabs at them has to roll a disadvantage for grappling because of the natural slime the Tentas secrete makes them near impossible to hold on to for very long or very well.
Knowing Touch-Just thru your Tenta-Monster experience of constantly touching things, you can tell the exact weight, the organic origin, the value or what material something is made of. Sorta like a natural ‘Magical Appraisal’
Venomous Secretion-Some Tentas have deadly venom and can secrete it if mishandled in a way they don’t approve-enemies have to make a saving throw or risk being very badly poisoned. They can control how acidic it is and if the roll is high enough, it can melt thru metals like locks and doors.
As for interactions with other races, I assume because they some what get along well with others, but for some reason it’s always Elves and Humans they don’t get along with-mainly because it’s always those two kinds of people who harvest their eggs to eat. Not to mention the erotica that is made about them depicting them as ‘molesting creatures who only want to lay their eggs inside hapless young people’-which if you some how cam across a Tenta Monster, they would be very offended that you asked such a question. And most certainly they did not do anything like that and would never do something like that.....and most would follow that last bit up with ‘at least not without consent and not after a nice dinner date first, there are standards to be held, we live in a SOCIETY.’ They certainly do not like that ‘kidnapping young maidens to use as breeding fodder’ contrived plot that somehow circulates thru gossip. Again, never did that, no evidence, just some bored dude writing a very weird specific erotica book that is hurting a semi-harmless group of people.
Drow and other Underdark folk are probably very social with them and know a little more about them than most underworlds-specifically the parts about how fond they are of processed sugars and their abilities of appraisals. I imagine it’s a bunch of Drowish Scholars who are the ones who actually try to study the species and argue all day and night about what’s fact and what’s fiction.
Can squirmlings see? They don't appear to have eyes
They do not, They are completely and 100% blind until they reach a certain age-which would be roughly 20 human years standard. Their eyes properly open and they are considered 100% full grown
Another nice thing to think above the tentafolk would be the merchants. I think they liking for touching thing could easily developt in an abbict of collecting trickets and other objects they interesanting. Then they go to marquets carriying their wares in various bags to tell stories about the thing they find and wanting to trade. Of course, their vision of "valuable" can be very different from others an so often they can only trade with other tentafolk.
Pros of going to a Tenta-Folk owned shop: You will find marvelous things, fantastic things they’ve acquired, probably something super rare that might have been over looked at the time or something of great worth.
The con is that the shopkeeper will excitedly tell you about the properties of a certain type of random rock they found rather than anything useful. What are you talking about-this is VOLCANIC GLASS! This is AMAZINg, why aren’t you amazed, hooman?
I picturing now someone who is metting a tentafolk for the first time expecting either an incompressible alien monster or some sort of pervert demon but instead is just a very polite nerd that like to touch thing.
You would be very correct.
They’re a reserved mostly solitary people who just want to gently touch things and maybe do a fun puzzle or two
