Listening to Terminal Cases with my earbuds, on the couch, at midnight, in my nearly pitch black, dead silent living room makes me feel like a kid in the late 70s listening to their new vinyl record about to be irrevocably changed.

ALBUM REVIEW: Matt Bennett “Terminal Cases”

With the abrupt cancellation of Nickelodeon TV show, ‘Victorious,’ the sudden death of actor Robin Williams, and his parents’ looming divorce on the way, singer-songwriter Matt Bennett needed a new creative outlet to focus his energy on.

Bennett channeled all the negativity in his life to create his debut album, Terminal Cases. The 10-track concept album takes listeners through stories of growing up, divorce, and moving forward nestled in a carefully-wrapped package of indie rock, beach pop, shoegaze, and punk.

The album was inspired by the late Robin Williams, as evident by its various titles and story lines. The release opens up with an introspective “Fisher King.” The slow, poppy track includes lyrics, “I’m not one for confession, maybe I’m here because I felt I have to or because I feel cursed.” 

“How about you?” Bennett begs as the song picks up ablaze with guitar solos and pounding drums. With a spoken voice similar to Cam Smith of Hotel Books, and a demeanor similar to Jeffrey Lewis, this song is everything one could ever hope for in an opening song.

“Moscow” and “Birdcage” are two of the most energetic tracks on the album. Pushing, and almost electrifying drums and guitars accompany Bennett’s striking, and angsty vocals.

“Jumanji,” is about shortfalls and lost passion and how “Life is so strange on the outside.” Bennett tugs at listeners emotions from the get-go. “After the game is over, you’re going home,” he sings, providing a fun twist to the film that shares the same title. 

“Bicentennial,” on the other hand, sees the musician experimenting with shoegaze and Japanese rock elements. Bennett explores more beach pop sounds on “Hook 1” with synchronized claps and a sound that just begs listeners to dance around.

Bennett’s singing style is notably one of his most impressive traits. Similarly, the singer-songwriter has the incredible ability to blend narrative-driven songs with sonically pleasing sounds to tell relatable stories.

There are few musicians whose music can appeal to a wide array of people, and Bennett is one of those musicians. Not all artists can jump between different influences, and be good at it, but Bennett can. His art is able to transcend multiple genres, without compromising his artistic integrity.

Terminal Cases is Bennett’s first full-length album, and a good one at that. I believe that some people were put on this Earth to be artists, and Bennett is one of those people. Now that he’s shown us what he’s got, there’s no reason for him to stop, now.
