#NorthsideSummitPush: the descent. When you hit the top, you're halfway there. This statement has a heavier feel to it when you're close to the cruising altitude of a 787. The pressure to get to where the air is thick and camps aren't exposed to the severe winds of the jet stream is constant and urgent. There is no time for dilly dallying. The business at hand is descent. Here we are almost back to Camp 3 (8300m/27,000'), just getting to the bottom of the Exit Cracks. The weather was still good at this point, just convective moisture building. We're headed up! We're well rested, the big teams are gone and we've got a great looking weather window. 🔥🔥🔥#FiredUp . @brooks.entwistle, @chadpeele and myself are joining @coryrichards, @adrianballinger and @estebantopomena (#EverestNoFilter) and heading up tomorrow with some of our #Sherpa team. The rest of the Sherpa will fly up later and catch us before high camp. Our #summit bid will take four days. We'll camp at the #NorthCol, Camp 2 (7700m) and Camp 3 (8400m) before going for the top on the 27th. . It feels like the end of the Earth, but it's the end of the #NortheastRidge of #MountEverest. @brooks.entwistle shot this pic of me two days ago when we toured to the Lhakpa La - the pass between #Everest and Lhakpa Ri. . @namgye, one of our super strong climbing Sherpa, smiling wide this morning at our #Puja ceremony. Our entire team (minus @brooks.entwistle, soon to arrive!) was at #EverestBaseCamp for this important ritual. . With help of the local Rongbuck lama, we prayed for safe passage on the mountain and had important climbing gear and food blessed - the #Lhasa beer was blessed, don't worry! It may look like snow, but this thing skis like an ice cube. Skiing #Mtfuji in winter is a great challenge... Especially when you're used to #Hokkaido powder 😆❄🗻⛷ . . For difficulty, it was a toss up between vertical gain and snow surface ski-ability. Since the roads were closed low on the mountain due to snow, we had a lot of vert to cover on foot. We started at under 4,000' and ended up on top 8,500' and 13km later. That was tough. But snow surface put up a good fight in the toughness department, with 5,000' of descent on boiler plate. . I used the sheen of the snow to pick our descent line -> Flat snow= 😊 shiny snow= 😝. I'm a skier, climber, and guide. I share a deep bond with the people I work and play with. These are people with whom I've hunkered down in storms, summited peaks, rescued others, bailed in sketchy situations and been inspired to do incredible things.
